3 Milwaukee Police Officers Injured in Shootout with Armed Suspect (Video)

Milwaukee Incident Leads to Police Shootout

In a broad daylight confrontation on September 6th, three Milwaukee police officers were wounded in a shootout with a suspect at an apartment complex located at 91st and Custer. The officers were at the scene to apprehend a man wanted on multiple charges when the incident turned violent. The Milwaukee Police Department’s (MPD) Special Investigation Division was involved in the operation, which escalated into a gunfight, leaving three officers injured and the suspect wounded.

Suspect Opens Fire, Police Return Shots

The situation unfolded around 10:15 a.m., as officers sought to take the 35-year-old suspect into custody. The man, who was wanted on charges related to firearms, domestic violence, and false imprisonment, reportedly opened fire on the police as they attempted to execute the arrest. Witnesses at the scene stated that the suspect initiated the gunfire, prompting officers to respond in self-defense. The confrontation was partially captured on video by a bystander, showing the intense moments of the exchange between the suspect and the police.

Three officers sustained injuries during the shootout. One officer was shot in the hand, while two others suffered grazing wounds. Fortunately, all three officers are expected to recover from their injuries. The suspect was also injured in the gunfire but survived the encounter.

Eyewitness Account of the Chaos

One of the individuals closest to the suspect was his roommate, who was not present during the shootout but returned home to a scene of chaos. The roommate, who wished to remain anonymous for safety reasons, described the scene inside their apartment as “torn up,” with broken glass and signs of the violent clash, including bullet holes and blood. According to the roommate, he learned of the shootout from a news article while at work, and upon returning home, he discovered the extensive damage left behind.

The roommate expressed shock and disbelief over the event, stating that he had no knowledge of his roommate’s criminal history. He said they had only moved in together in June, and he was unaware of any outstanding warrants against the suspect. Reflecting on the situation, he expressed gratitude that he was not home when the gunfight occurred, feeling “gracious” and “lucky” to have avoided the dangerous confrontation.

Police Response and Statements

In a press briefing, Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman condemned the actions of the suspect, emphasizing that such violent behavior, especially involving firearms, is entirely unacceptable. Chief Norman underscored how fortunate the officers were to survive the encounter, stating that the situation could have ended tragically with the loss of officers’ lives.

“This could have been much worse,” Chief Norman said, emphasizing the gravity of the threat posed to the officers and the public during the incident. The chief reaffirmed the MPD’s commitment to protecting the community and ensuring that individuals engaging in criminal activities involving firearms face justice.

Following the shootout, the four officers involved in the return fire were placed on administrative duty, in accordance with the department’s standard procedures for incidents involving officer-involved shootings. This measure ensures a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the gunfight while maintaining transparency and accountability within the department.

Public Reactions and Aftermath

The incident sparked a swift response from both local authorities and members of the public. Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson also addressed the event, standing alongside Chief Norman to support the injured officers and express concern over the growing prevalence of gun violence in the city.

The mayor and the police chief agreed that the incident was a stark reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers daily, particularly in situations involving armed suspects. Both leaders called for community support in efforts to reduce gun violence and urged residents to work with law enforcement to promote safer neighborhoods.

As the investigation into the shootout continues, the MPD is expected to conduct an internal review of the officers’ actions, as well as a detailed examination of the events that led to the suspect’s decision to open fire. All individuals involved, including the suspect, are expected to survive their injuries.

The event has left the local community shaken, as neighbors and witnesses grapple with the reality of a violent gunfight taking place in their normally quiet apartment complex. Meanwhile, Milwaukee police are committed to ensuring that justice is served and that the city remains safe for its residents.
