As of this year, I have worked for myself for 17 years and I would not have it any other way. In my case, I hated politics and I was too creative for environments where my creativity could not prosper. Being a black man, I also had to deal with racism, jealousy and being put in a box by higher ups as to what my job and my destiny would be.
I knew that I was smarter than every boss I have ever had and being fired from one industry job after being mixed up in massive BS politics I decided to branch out on my own. It made no sense to me to make other people richer while I tried to make ends meet with a meager salary. I have never looked back and I’ve had much greater success working for myself than I could have ever had working for someone else.
Contrary to popular belief starting your own business is not as hard as people think. The first thing they always say is “I need a steady paycheck” and I agree, what they fail to realize is you can triple and quadruple your paycheck if you’re willing to put a little hustle in it and you can eliminate 95% of the stress that goes along with most jobs by getting out of the politics and allowing someone else to control your destiny.
Check out the five tips on each page and see if you are ready or have what it takes.
1. You are Tired of the Grind
Working for a corporation has it's pluses and minuses. The greatest plus is a steady paycheck but the greatest minus is the dedication to something you may not like doing, the politics and the possibility of falling victim to the economy and cutbacks which can always keep you on edge about keeping a job you don't really like in the first place
2. You Do Something Well
Is there something that you do exceptionally well? Can you cut hair? Do you make great cheesecakes? Are you good at managing people? Are you a great artist? Whatever it is that people constantly compliment you on that is the one clue for a possible business.
3. You Have a Passion for Something
As the old saying goes do what you love and the money will come. If you're good at doing something, there is a good chance you're probably very passionate about it too. Passion and ability are the two keys to success.
4. You can Work Alone
Working alone can be a challenge, there is nobody to bounce ideas off, no social interaction (unless you create it) and no time clock to punch. You have to be dedicated to not only perform your craft but also to hustle to get new business.
5. You Need More Money
Who doesn't? Starting your own business doesn't mean you have to immediately quit your present full time job. You can start small by working weekends and evenings and build your client base. Beware corporations are in the business of creating a machine to help the corporation grow, they don't like independent people so make sure if you decide to start your own business that you keep the news away from your present job
To that end...
If you are in step with the 5 things above, the first thing I would suggest is to simply BUILD your business. Don't do any research, ask questions or go to meetings because these are all the things that can and will discourage you. There are people who call themselves experts in the field who will discourage you with their negative outlook on the economy etc. They are not YOU and YOU are not them. Your results could be the complete opposite of theirs. Keep the passion alive and roll with it and you will learn things as you go along. Good luckKev (kevin@theindustry.biz)
