5G Broadcast is gaining momentum in Europe, with a launch targeted for 2027. Major players are teaming up to reshape how content is delivered.
In a notable advancement for mobile broadcasting, the 5G Broadcast Strategic Task Force (5BSTF) is gearing up for the first commercial launch of its services across Europe by 2027. With the backing of Rohde & Schwarz and various media entities, this initiative is set to create a unified commercial roadmap that will span six key European markets. Collectively, these regions represent a combined population of over 270 million people.
Founded in September 2024, the 5BSTF was established by Media Broadcast from Germany and TDF from France. Aimed at achieving market readiness for 5G Broadcast technology, the Task Force has expanded its membership quickly, recently celebrating the completion of its initial “Sprint.” During this phase, the focus was on reaching a targeted population coverage of 125 million across Germany, France, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, and Belgium.
The Task Force believes this initiative will unlock a new addressable market that could emerge in the latter half of 2027. Members of 5BSTF have indicated a willingness to reconfigure parts of their existing broadcast networks to support 5G connectivity. This shift will enable content providers and broadcasters to offer specialized services, particularly for live and linear audiovisual content, appealing to their dedicated fan bases.
While 5G Broadcast faces a different fate in North America, interest in the initiative is reportedly growing in regions such as Asia and Latin America. The Task Force has highlighted that this international attention could enhance their operations and attract more original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) into the fold, further broadening the potential market.
