Should You Ditch Spotify Over Its Controversial Choices?

Spotify Wrapped: A Double-Edged Sword

Every year, millions of Spotify users look forward to their personalized Spotify Wrapped, a fun year-in-review that showcases their listening habits. But here’s the thing: that cheerful wrap-up might not be enough to ignore the murky waters beneath the surface.

Questionable Investments and Ethics

Spotify’s CEO Daniel Ek has been stirring the pot lately. He’s poured close to $700 million into a European defense startup called Helsing. Now, Helsing isn’t just playing around; they develop AI-driven military tech. You know, the kind that can operate drones in conflict zones. Their own website touts their mission to “protect democratic values.” But really? How many of us are comfortable supporting an app that funds war technology?

The Rise of AI Music

And while you’re grooving to your Spotify Wrapped playlist, consider this: Spotify’s allowing AI-generated songs to flood its platform. By 2028, it’s predicted that artists could lose up to 24 percent of their revenue—over $10 billion—as AI music claims up to 20 percent of the streaming market. No one wants to see their favorite musicians get squeezed out. But that’s the reality we’re facing.

Ads That Spark Outrage

On top of all this, Spotify has been running recruitment ads for ICE since October 2025. You read that right. Ads encouraging people to join an agency known for aggressive tactics against immigrants. That’s not just a PR blunder; it’s a slap in the face to many listeners. In response, the “Spotify Unwrapped” campaign has emerged, pushing back against these recruitment ads and raising awareness of the company’s questionable practices.

What Are You Supporting?

With over 713 million users, including 281 million premium subscribers, Spotify is undeniably a giant in the music streaming world. But when the fun stops and you peel back the layers, what do you really see? Are you comfortable leveraging your ears to support a platform that’s making choices many find unethical? It’s a tough call, especially when it’s easy to fall into the rhythm of curated playlists.

Time to Think Twice?

Spotify Wrapped might be the highlight of your year, but it’s time to ask the hard questions. Is it worth it to ignore the ethical implications of staying loyal to Spotify? Do your streaming dollars align with your values? You’ve got options out there. Just keep your eyes open and do the work.
