Looks like Jimmy Guzman is making waves with his latest track, ‘Vendetta,’ blending regional Mexican sounds with hip hop. He’s definitely one to watch in this evolving scene.
Jimmy Guzman has just released his new single “Vendetta,” featuring the Tijuana talent Ysrael Barajas, under Lumbre Music. This latest track signifies a bold step in the musical fusion between regional Mexican music and urban genres like trap and hip hop. While there’s no universally accepted term for this combination—unlike the well-established classifications of banda, norteño, and mariachi—many industry insiders are casually referring to it as RegMex.
Spotify’s recent analysis reveals a significant surge in what they categorize as “Mexican music,” which, despite the broad label, highlights the diverse array of styles within the genre. The platform noted a staggering 56% growth in streams for this category in 2022, doubling the growth rate of the previous two years. Since 2019, total streams have more than doubled to an impressive 5.6 billion, showing that listeners are eager for fresh sounds.
In Mexico, one in every four music streams is a Mexican track, and in the United States, this type of music ranks among the fastest-growing genres. Guzman’s new offering, “Vendetta,” exemplifies this trend as it marries catchy rhythms with the grit of urban music.
“Vendetta” serves as a showcase for Guzman’s dynamic style, blending hip-hop beats with the cadence of dembow and the traditional essence of regional Mexican music. Drawing inspiration from artists like Drake, Rich The Kid, and XXXTENTACION, Guzman creates an engaging listening experience. The lyrics explore themes of ambition and personal sacrifices—specifically his mother’s influence in his life—as Guzman aims to balance his rapid ascent in the industry with his commitment to providing for his partner.
The chorus of “Vendetta” is designed to grab attention, enveloping the listener in a rhythmic flow that compels movement. However, the lyrics are explicit and convey a raw sentiment regarding revenge and heartbreak, stemming from Guzman’s own experiences. “A person who cannot control excesses, money, or women. However, with a very big but broken heart, he wrote this song,” Guzman expresses, revealing the emotional depth behind the track.
With 5.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify and over 165.6 million global streams, Guzman is rapidly gaining traction in the music world. His earlier hits, such as “Huaraches” and “Antrax,” have also amassed millions of streams, with his top song, “3 AM,” hitting over 127 million streams. His newest single, “La Plebita,” featuring Alan Arrieta, has also made its mark on Mexico’s Spotify Top 150.
Guzman, who hails from Veracruz, skillfully fuses tropical sounds with electronic elements, creating a unique sound that resonates with fans. Recently signed by Lumbre Music, co-founded by Alexander Guerra and Ramón Ruíz of the group Legado 7, Guzman is in good company with a label known for nurturing talent in the evolving regional Mexican scene. Lumbre Music has successfully supported other artists like Yahritza y Su Esencia and has previously collaborated with Rancho Humilde to elevate names like Fuerza Regida.
Listeners can tune in to “Vendetta” as it becomes available at 4 p.m. PT today.
