Sisters Remembered
The victims, 17-year-old Zana Mohammed and 18-year-old Aisha Mohammed, were described by their father, Mohammed Ahmed, as selfless and the best daughters in the world. He refers to them in the present tense, believing they are always with him.
The Incident
The tragedy unfolded when the sisters were caught in rough waters at Coney Island Beach. Despite calls for help and attempts to save them, the situation escalated quickly. The girls were part of a group of 12 family members and friends, including their older sister Miriam and their father Mohammed. Lifeguards had gone off duty at 6:00 p.m., and calls for help were made around 8:00 p.m. The girls were in the water with their cousin, who was eventually saved. However, the sisters were dragged out by heavy waves, strong winds, and rain.
Efforts to Save Them
Approximately 90 minutes later, Zana and Aisha were pulled out of the water in critical condition. Despite making it out of the water initially, they went back in and were unable to escape.
