The nominees for the 2025 SCL Awards® include many who have also been shortlisted for the 97th Academy Awards, announced on December 17, 2024. In the “Music (Original Song)” category, nine of the fifteen Academy Awards shortlist nominees are also SCL Awards® nominees. Similarly, six SCL Awards® score nominees are on the shortlist for the “Music (Original Score)” category.
Composers Clément Ducol and Camille, alongside Atticus Ross (recognized for CHALLENGERS and SHŌGUN), each received three nominations.
The nominees for Original Score for a Studio Film include Clément Ducol and Camille for EMILIA PÉREZ, Hans Zimmer for DUNE: PART TWO, Harry Gregson-Williams for GLADIATOR II, John Powell and Stephen Schwartz for WICKED: PART 1, Kris Bowers for THE WILD ROBOT, and Volker Bertelmann for CONCLAVE.
For Outstanding Original Score for an Independent Film, the nominees are Chris Bacon for HERETIC, Daniel Blumberg for THE BRUTALIST, Dara Taylor for MEET ME NEXT CHRISTMAS, Fabrizio Mancinelli for HERE AFTER, Heather McIntosh for WINNER, and Stephanie Economou for THE BOOK OF JOBS.
In the category of Outstanding Original Song for a Dramatic or Documentary Visual Media Production, the nominees include Diane Warren for “The Journey” from THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT, Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin, and Andrew Watt for “Never Too Late” from ELTON JOHN: NEVER TOO LATE, Andrew Wyatt, Lykke Li, and Miley Cyrus for “Beautiful That Way” from THE LAST SHOWGIRL, Bear McCreary for “Old Tom Bombadil” from THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER, Christopher Lennertz for “Let’s Put The Christ Back In Christmas” from THE BOYS, and Nicholas Britell, Steve McQueen, and Taura Stinson for “Winter Coat” from BLITZ.
The Society of Composers & Lyricists (SCL) announced the nominations for the 2025 Annual SCL Awards® on December 18, 2024. The awards celebrate excellence and innovation in music for visual media. The 6th annual awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on February 12, 2025, hosted by singer-songwriter Colin Hay of Men at Work and Ringo Starr fame.
Clément Ducol and Camille, composers and songwriters for Netflix’s EMILIA PÉREZ, received three nominations, including Outstanding Original Score for a Studio Film. They were also nominated twice for Outstanding Original Song for a Comedy or Musical Visual Media Production for the songs “Mi Camino” and “El Mal,” the latter co-written with the film’s writer/director Jacques Audiard.
Atticus Ross received three nominations as well, including Outstanding Original Song for a Comedy or Musical Visual Media Production for “Compress/Repress” from the Amazon MGM Studios film CHALLENGERS, co-composed with Trent Reznor and Luca Guadagnino.
Diane Warren was nominated for Outstanding Original Song for a Dramatic or Documentary Visual Media Production for her song “The Journey” from Netflix’s THE SIX TRIPLE EIGHT. Warren has been nominated every year and won in 2023 for her song “Applause” from TELL IT LIKE A WOMAN. Elton John, Brandi Carlile, Bernie Taupin, and Andrew Watt were also nominated in this category for “Never Too Late” from the Disney+ documentary ELTON JOHN: NEVER TOO LATE.
Composers Atticus Ross, his brother Leopold Ross, and Nick Chuba garnered two nominations for the original title sequence and original score of the acclaimed FX limited series SHŌGUN. Bear McCreary also earned two nominations for his work on THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RINGS OF POWER, composing both the original score and the song “Old Tom Bombadil.” Additionally, Blake Neely (MASTERS OF THE AIR on Apple TV+) and Jeff Toyne (PALM ROYALE on Apple TV+) received two nominations each for their original title sequences and scores.
The prestigious Spirit of Collaboration Award will be presented to composer Harry Gregson-Williams and director Ridley Scott, recognizing their prolific partnership, which includes the upcoming GLADIATOR II, their seventh collaboration. Gregson-Williams previously collaborated with Scott on films such as THE MARTIAN, KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, THE LAST DUEL, and HOUSE OF GUCCI, as well as themes for PROMETHEUS and EXODUS: GODS AND KINGS. The award presentation will feature musical performances showcasing their collaborative work.
Gregson-Williams praised Scott’s open-minded approach to music, emphasizing the director’s unique way of discussing light, darkness, and texture instead of traditional musical terms. Scott highlighted the integral role music plays in filmmaking, describing it as a language that adds dynamic depth to a film.
Last year, Martin Scorsese received the Spirit of Collaboration Award for his work with the late composer Robbie Robertson. Previous recipients include Thomas Newman and Sam Mendes, Terence Blanchard and Spike Lee, Carter Burwell and the Coen Brothers, and Justin Hurwitz and Damien Chazelle.
Finally, the SCL Jury Award will honor five-time Emmy-winning composer Jeff Beal for his score for the Weimar Cinema masterpiece THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI, one of the most influential silent films in history.
