CBS Atlanta is rolling out its new local news and weather operations, staffed by a team of journalists and leaders deeply connected to the city of Atlanta and its surrounding areas. Starting August 16, CBS Atlanta (WUPA, channel 69) will begin its transition, with local weather coverage launching during CBS MORNINGS on August 18. The full news operation is set to launch in September.

The station’s leadership emphasizes its commitment to building a newsroom rooted in the community, with people who not only work in the area but live and grow in it as well. Jennifer Mitchell, president of CBS Stations, explains, “We aren’t just hiring a team – we are building one from the community. They’re here to listen, serve and tell stories that matter.”
Key hires include Nichole Green, assistant news director, who joins from CBS New York, where she led community-focused programming. An Emmy-nominated journalist with strong local ties, Green brings a passion for impactful storytelling. Other newsroom leaders include:
Lea-Anne Jackson: Creative services director, who has spent over three decades in Atlanta, including five years at WUPA.
Alex Sanz: Managing editor, set to begin on August 18. A veteran journalist with more than a decade of experience in Atlanta, Sanz has previously worked at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution and The Associated Press.
Meteorologist Troy Bridges has also been hired. A Georgia native and University of Georgia alum, Bridges brings decades of experience forecasting weather across the Southeast and Midwest. With a background in severe weather coverage, including tornadoes, tropical storms, and wildfires, Bridges is excited to return to his home state and join CBS Atlanta’s weather team.
“We’re committed to solutions journalism that informs, inspires, and holds the powerful accountable,” says Tom Canedo, president and general manager of CBS Atlanta. “Our team reflects the energy and authenticity of this city, ensuring that we spotlight the stories that truly matter to the people of Atlanta.”
In addition to these key hires, CBS Atlanta has recruited producers and photojournalists who have strong local connections. This growing team of community journalists will work closely with editorial and newsgathering teams to ensure that every story reflects the community’s values and concerns.
CBS Atlanta’s transition to its new home on WUPA, Channel 69, will officially begin on August 16. The full news operation is scheduled to begin in September, marking a new chapter in local news coverage for Atlanta.
