**Southaven K-9 Officer Injured in High-Speed Chase After Suspect Fleeing Traffic Stop**
SOUTHAVEN, MS – A routine traffic stop turned into a chaotic pursuit Wednesday evening when a suspect fled from officers, leading to a dramatic chase that left a Southaven K-9 officer injured.
The incident unfolded around 6:30 PM, when officers pulled over a vehicle on Goodman Road for a suspected traffic violation. However, the situation escalated rapidly when the driver—identifying himself as 32-year-old Jamel Hicks—bolted from the scene, prompting officers to give chase.
Dashcam footage released by the Southaven Police Department shows the moment Hicks abandoned his vehicle, sprinting down a nearby residential street. Officers pursued on foot, with K-9 Officer Rex, a Belgian Malinois, leading the way. Despite the K-9’s determination and training, the pursuit took a dangerous turn when Hicks allegedly retaliated, throwing a metal object at Rex.
The impact injured Officer Rex, prompting immediate medical attention. “We are heartbroken for our K-9 Officer Rex, who has bravely served this community,” said Police Chief Steve Pirtle. “These dogs put their lives on the line for us, and we will ensure he receives the best care possible.”
Officers successfully apprehended Hicks about a mile from the original traffic stop after deploying a Taser. He was charged with multiple offenses, including fleeing law enforcement and assaulting a police animal.
Officer Rex was taken to a local veterinary clinic for evaluation. According to sources, the K-9 is stable and recovering from his injuries, garnering an outpouring of support from the community and fellow law enforcement officers.
