**Prepare Your Car and Home for Winter Emergencies: Tips from Michigan Officials**

As Michigan gears up for another harsh winter, residents are reminded to take proactive steps to prepare for potential emergencies during the colder months. Following this week’s first taste of winter weather, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has declared Winter Hazards Awareness Week, marking a critical time for Michiganders to get ready for what lies ahead.

“Winter can be unpredictable in Michigan, and it’s essential to be prepared whether you’re on the road or at home,” said Clayton Cummins, representative from the Michigan State Police and the Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. “Now is the time to take action.”

For those venturing out in their vehicles, Cummins advises creating a winter emergency kit that includes basic supplies like a flashlight, blankets, non-perishable food, water, a first aid kit, and even a shovel. It’s also important to ensure your car is winter-ready with proper tires, antifreeze, and battery checks. Regular maintenance can prevent breakdowns when temperatures plunge.

Home preparedness is equally crucial. Residents should consider winterizing their homes by insulating pipes, keeping a supply of non-perishable food, and having at least three days’ worth of necessary medications on hand. “Don’t wait until the snow is falling. Prepare your home and family for potential power outages or severe weather conditions,” Cummins stressed.

In addition to individual preparedness, authorities encourage community members to check on neighbors, especially the elderly and those who may need extra assistance during extreme weather.

With winter just beginning, it’s vital for every household to stay informed, stay prepared, and stay safe this season. Visit the Michigan State Police website for more tips and resources on winter emergency readiness.
