Multiple Fire Crews Battle Blaze in Southeast Memphis
SE Southeast MEMPHIS – A significant fire erupted Tuesday morning in Southeast Memphis, prompting a swift response from multiple fire crews to bring the flames under control.
Smoke billowed high into the sky as firefighters arrived on the scene around 10 a.m. at the intersection of Winchester and Riverdale, where the fire engulfed a commercial building. Eyewitnesses reported seeing flames shooting from the roof, which quickly drew the attention of residents and local businesses nearby.
Fire Chief Mark Hinton confirmed that five fire units were deployed to battle the blaze. “When we arrived, the situation was already well-established, but our crews worked diligently to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to adjacent structures,” Hinton stated.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials believe it may have originated in a storage area within the building. Crew members faced challenges due to the high heat and smoke, forcing them to employ aerial trucks to combat the blaze from above.
Local residents were evacuated as a precaution. “I heard the sirens and looked outside to see the flames. It was terrifying,” said one neighbor, who witnessed the incident unfold from across the street. “You never expect something like this in your own backyard.”
As of early afternoon, firefighters were still on-site, working to extinguish the last remnants of the fire and assess the damage. Fortunately, there have been no reported injuries, but crews are emphasizing the importance of fire safety as they continue to investigate what led to the incident.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the fire’s origins to come forward. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Residents in the area are urged to remain vigilant as cleanup continues in the coming days.
