Thanksgiving dinner is one of the most eagerly awaited meals of the year, but it can also lead to a whirlwind of stress for the cook. To help alleviate some of that pressure, Butterball has shared their top secrets for nailing the perfect turkey this holiday season. On Wednesday, Karen Wilcher, a member of the Butterball team, joined Local 4 Live to offer invaluable tips for chefs tackling the centerpiece of the Thanksgiving feast.

Wilcher emphasized the importance of preparation. She suggested that cooks start with a high-quality turkey and make sure it’s fully thawed before cooking. “A frozen turkey can compromise cooking times and leave you with a less-than-ideal bird,” she noted. To successfully thaw a turkey, Butterball recommends allowing approximately 24 hours of thawing time for every 4 to 5 pounds of turkey.

Next up on Wilcher’s list: seasoning and flavoring. “Don’t be shy with the butter,” she advised, as this adds moisture and flavor. Wilcher recommends rubbing butter under the skin for maximum flavor penetration. “Herbs and spices can also elevate your turkey’s taste, so don’t hesitate to experiment,” she added.

Finally, Wilcher shared the secret to achieving that coveted crispy skin. “Start cooking the turkey at a high temperature for the first part of the cooking process, then lower it to finish cooking. This retains the juices and ensures a beautiful golden brown exterior,” she explained.
