Audoo partners with GEMA on Music Impact Study in Retail & Gastronomy

Music technology company Audoo has partnered with GEMA, the German performing rights organization, on its Music Impact Study. This study aims to quantify the commercial value of background music in gastronomy and retail spaces, with Audoo’s technology capturing real-time songplay data contributing to sales uplift.

Audoo partners with GEMA on Music Impact Study in Retail & Gastronomy

Audoo’s Audio Meters, which are music recognition hardware, have been installed in hundreds of venues. These meters have recognized over 130,000 tracks, offering insights that demonstrate how background music increases sales by an average of 8% in retail and 5.4% in gastronomy. This suggests that a music license is a worthwhile investment for businesses.

The most-played song in the Retail sample was “Lifeline” by Glockenbach featuring Ella Henderson, while the most-played track in the Gastronomy sample was “Austin” by Dasha. Other notable tracks include “Wave” by Fast Boy and Raf (in Gastronomy), with top domestic artists like Trettmann (Retail) and Michael Schulte (Gastronomy) leading the charts.

The Music Impact Study, led by international scientists, used multiple methodologies to examine the connection between music and sales. It began with literature research, quantitative surveys, and expert interviews before moving to an empirical field study at the point of sale.

Audoo’s intelligent client dashboard revealed trends and insights, while the simple, plug-and-play installation process of its devices in venues and their GDPR compliance highlighted the value of this technology for retail and hospitality businesses.

Sonja Schoenfeld, Project Manager of the Music Impact Study at GEMA, praised the real-time data collected using Audoo technology, noting its usefulness in analyzing the impact of music in commercial spaces. Johannes Everding, Director of Business Development at GEMA, emphasized Audoo’s innovative technology and its role in facilitating effective data collection. Ryan Edwards, CEO and Founder of Audoo, highlighted the importance of real-world data in demonstrating the impact of music in public spaces.

The Music Impact Study underscores the value of accurate music usage tracking and its potential to benefit both businesses and rightsholders.
