Billie Eilish: Variety’s Hitmaker of the Year

Billie Eilish, the 17-year-old singer and songwriter, has been named Variety’s Hitmaker of the Year, marking the culmination of her remarkable 2019 journey.

This accolade will be celebrated at the upcoming third annual Hitmakers Brunch, sponsored by Citi, set to take place on December 7 in Los Angeles. Eilish will also grace the cover of Variety’s all-music issue on December 4, featuring an extensive interview and a fresh photoshoot.

Variety’s Honorees

Furthermore, Variety has bestowed the title of executive of the year upon Jody Gerson, chairman/CEO of Universal Music Publishing Group. Jason Owen, whose roster includes Kacey Musgraves and Dan + Shay, has been recognized as manager of the year, and Republic Records has been honored as label of the year. Additionally, Citi and Variety will jointly present an award to a female artist who has leveraged her influence to support women in the music industry.

Hitmakers Franchise

The Hitmakers franchise commemorates the music accomplishments of the year, acknowledging the contributions of writers, producers, publi<a href="shers, managers, and executives who played pivotal roles in creating and promoting the 25 most consumed songs, as compiled by BuzzAngle Music. Billie Eilish's "bad guy" secured the fifth spot among the most consumed songs of the year and has amassed nearly a billion streams on Spotify. Eilish, known for her collaboration with her multi-instrumentalist brother and producer Finneas, who also features on Variety's Hitmakers list.

  • Ellie Goulding, recipient of the Decade Award, whose decade-spanning hit songs include “Lights,” “Love Me Like You Do,” and “Close to Me.”
  • Megan Thee Stallion, recognized as the Breakthrough Artist, has risen in the hip-hop scene with tracks like “Hot Girl Summer” featuring Nicki Minaj and Ty Dolla Sign.
  • BTS, named Group of the Year, solidified their status as global superstars with a record-breaking stadium tour and a string of top-selling singles.
  • Swae Lee, honored with the Crossover Award for his success on “Sunflower” alongside Post Malone, as well as collaborations with artists like Travis Scott and Madonna.
  • Ryan Tedder, awarded Songwriter of the Year, known for his songwriting contributions to hits by Adele, Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and his role in the Jonas Brothers’ comeback with “Sucker.”
