Black Music Incubator Project Takes Aim at Skills Shortage

The Black Music Incubator Project is a new initiative launched by Generator, a regional music development organization, and Nothin But The Music (NBTM), a creative consultancy, to support Black musicians and creatives in the north of England. The project aims to address the skills shortage in the music industry by empowering emerging talent and creating a national model for Black representation in the industry.

Collaboration and Backing

The project is a collaboration between Generator and NBTM, with support from Warner Music UK and Interval Records. According to Generator CEO Mick Ross, the initiative “is designed to advance emerging talent from all sides of the industry while filling the gap of the notorious skills shortage at present.”

Expanding Beyond the North

While the incubator is initially focused on the north-east, north-west, and north of England, the goal is to create a national model for Black representation in the music industry. As Ross stated, “creating a national model from this is not only feasible, but also the collective goal all involved are striving for.”

Empowering Black Talent

NBTM founder Yaw Owusu believes there is a real need to do something “impactful and tangible” for Black music creators and industry professionals to have a fair shot at launching a career in the music industry. The project aims to provide opportunities and support for Black musicians and creatives to succeed in the industry.

Addressing Equity and Inclusion

The Black Music Incubator Project is part of ongoing efforts to address issues of equality and equity for Black music creators and industry professionals. The project’s backers are committed to creating a sustainable and inclusive model for the music industry.
