Caught on Camera: 22-Year-Old Tries to Kidnap Students at Elementary School (video)

In a deeply unsettling incident that has left a community shaken, parents in Clarkdale, Arizona, are demanding answers and accountability after an attempted kidnapping at Clarkdale Jerome Elementary School. The suspect, 22-year-old Micah Hines, was apprehended following a disturbing sequence of events that unfolded during school hours and has raised serious concerns about student safety and emergency response protocols.

Caught on Camera: 22-Year-Old Tries to Kidnap Students at Elementary School (video)

A Disturbing Intrusion During Recess

According to police reports, the incident occurred during a fifth-grade recess when Micah Hines allegedly jumped a fence and hid inside an outdoor girls’ bathroom on the school premises. Authorities say he attempted to videotape and kidnap a couple of fifth-grade girls. One of the girls reportedly noticed the camera and was able to provide a description of the device, his shoes, and his clothing. The girls’ quick thinking and attention to detail later proved critical in identifying the suspect.

After being caught by police, Hines confessed to the crime, reportedly admitting that he acted on a fetish. This admission has only intensified the fear and anger among parents and the broader community. The thought that someone with such intentions could so easily gain access to a school bathroom has sparked widespread concern about the adequacy of school security measures.

Emotional Community Response and School Meeting

In response to the incident, more than 100 concerned community members gathered at Clarkdale Jerome Elementary School for an emergency meeting. The gathering, organized by the school district and local police, served as a platform for parents to voice their outrage and concern over how the situation was handled.

One particularly emotional moment came when a community member stood up to defend school staff, saying, “I know he goes home at night and loses sleep. I know Mrs. Westcott goes home at night and loses sleep. So how dare anyone say that we’re not doing everything to protect these kids.” Despite the staff’s visible distress and commitment, parents felt that more could have been done—especially in the hours after the incident.

Concerns Over Delayed Arrest and Dismissal Procedures

One of the most heated points of contention was the school’s decision to release children to walk home at the usual dismissal time, even though Hines had not yet been taken into custody. Parent William McDougall, whose three children attend the school, expressed his concern that students were released while a suspect was still at large. “Did one of your kids walk home when there was someone at large?” he asked during the meeting, voicing the fears of many parents who believe that standard dismissal should have been delayed until the suspect was apprehended.

Police defended the school’s actions by stating that the situation was rapidly evolving and that they were working with the information available at the time. “It was a very rapidly moving event that we felt like—like we knew who the suspect was. He’d gotten on the bus, he’d gotten out of the area,” an officer explained, referring to Hines fleeing the scene using public transportation.

Arrest and Charges

Micah Hines was ultimately arrested later that evening in Cottonwood after surveillance footage circulated on social media led to multiple tips. He now faces serious charges including attempted kidnapping and voyeurism. Police have not released further details about his background, but community members are calling for a full investigation into how he was able to enter school grounds and evade detection for as long as he did.

Ongoing Fear and Calls for Change

The community remains on edge. One mother, fighting back tears, explained that her daughter saw everything as it happened. “I can’t imagine that if my daughter walked into that bathroom by herself and didn’t have no friends with her—what would she do? I don’t know what she would do. And nobody would know because there’s nobody around.” Her fears are shared by many others who believe that the physical layout of school facilities, particularly outdoor restrooms, must be re-evaluated for safety.

The school district has not yet announced any concrete changes in policy or infrastructure but acknowledged the need for a thorough review. Parents are demanding better surveillance, secure fencing, and immediate alert systems to prevent such incidents in the future.

This attempted kidnapping has left a scar on the small Arizona town. While grateful that no children were physically harmed, residents are unified in their demand for safer schools, stricter security, and transparency from those responsible for protecting their children. As investigations continue and legal proceedings begin, the community remains watchful, determined to ensure that such a terrifying breach of safety never happens again.
