Yesterday, Deadline Hollywood Co-Editor Mike Fleming Jr. issued an apology for Nellie Andreeva’s controversial article asking if increased diversity on TV is “too much of a good thing.” The apology, however, missed the point, blaming the word “ethnic” and the title of the article, rather than the substance of the controversial piece.

Rashad Robinson, Executive Director of ColorOfChange.org, issued the following statement:

“The multitudes of people deeply offended by Andreeva’s piece were responding to its content, not its title. The article’s core argument was a dangerous one: that opening the doors of opportunity for marginalized communities will somehow hurt white people. This is precisely the thinking that maintains a discriminatory status quo in Hollywood.

“Almost as galling as the article itself is the fact it received a green light from Deadline in the first place. For a major entertainment news outlet like Deadline Hollywood to provide a platform for such harmful rhetoric suggests a serious breakdown in their editorial process, and a lack of diversity behind the scenes.

“It is imperative Deadline fully acknowledge the magnitude of the problem here, reveal their diversity data, and announce a clear plan for ensuring this never happens again.”

With more than one million members, ColorOfChange.org is the nation’s largest online civil rights organization.
