College of Education to host virtual commemoration of life for Hill and Evans

The College of Education and Human Development at Jackson State University will commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Melvin I. Evans Sr., and Dr. Hill Williams Jr, respectively, via a virtual ceremony from 10 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. (CST) on Thursday, September 10, 2020. Dr. Melvin I. Evans Sr. served as professor and chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation in the College of Education for 31 years. In 2001 he retired, after 47 years in the education profession.  Prior to joining JSU, Evans served as a teacher, football and basketball coach, and athletic director at various South Carolina, Massachusetts, and Maryland institutions. Evans was married to his wife, Dora Gathers, for 69 years. The couple has four children and 10 grandchildren.

Dr. Hill Williams Jr. was a tenured associate professor and chair of the Department of Health, Physical Education & Recreation in the College of Education and Human Development. A JSU alum, Williams also served in various capacities at the University, including director of the Sports Science program. Williams married Millie Inge in 1967. The couple has one son and three grandchildren.
