Cox Media Group (CMG) has announced an exciting leadership change, promoting Joe Cowan to News Director at WSB-TV, one of the top-rated TV stations in the country. Cowan will take on this role starting in mid-June, returning to WSB-TV after a successful stint as news director at WHIO-TV in Dayton, Ohio, another CMG station known for its strong performance.
“Joe is the perfect fit to lead Channel 2 Action News,” said Marian Pittman, President of WSB-TV and CMG Content. “His experience, leadership, and commitment to community journalism align perfectly with our values. We are thrilled to have him back in Atlanta and part of the WSB team.”
Cowan’s career with CMG spans 18 years, including 16 years at WSB-TV where he progressed from news producer to senior executive producer, and eventually multi-platform managing editor. His experience and dedication have earned him several prestigious accolades, including the 2024 regional Edward R. Murrow Award with the WHIO-TV News Center 7 team. Additionally, from 2016 to 2022, Cowan and his team at WSB-TV won seven consecutive regional Emmy Awards for Best Newscast.
For Cowan, the key to success in broadcasting is clear. “Our role as local broadcasters is to deliver the news that our communities need, in a way that’s engaging and meaningful. That’s what drives us,” Cowan shared. “It’s all about collaboration, striving for excellence, and ultimately, creating a team culture where success is celebrated. There’s no greater feeling than winning together.”
In the ever-evolving landscape of the media industry, Cowan’s leadership and vision promise to continue strengthening WSB-TV's reputation for quality journalism, providing trusted news and entertainment to its loyal audience.
