Even though Will Smith “ruined” Oscars night for many people, Steve Harvey said he accepts the “I Am Legend” star’s apology. The story of Smith slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars is still trending, said Shirley Strawberry. The actor has stayed quiet for several months. Smith uploaded an emotional video to YouTube to discuss what he did and ask for forgiveness from Chris Rock.
“I will say to you, Chris, I apologize to you. My behavior was unacceptable, and I’m here whenever you’re ready to talk. I can say to all of you, there is no part of me that thinks that was the right way to behave in that moment. There’s no part of me that thinks that’s the optimal way to handle a feeling of disrespect or insults,” explained Smith.
The slap earned Smith a 10-year ban from the Academy, said Strawberry. He closed the message by saying: “I hate when I let people down, so it hurts. It hurts me psychologically and emotionally to know I didn’t live up to people’s image and impression of me.”
For the most part, Chris Rock has not responded to Smith’s apology; said Strawberry. However, he did incorporate the situation into his act. Rock said everyone is trying to be a victim. The comedian made his comment at Atlanta’s fox Theater on Friday night, informed Strawberry. No one will hear the real victims if everyone claims to be a victim.
“I went to work the next day. I got kids. Anyone who says words hurt have never been punched in the face,” said Rock.
Harvey thinks Smith was shocked and caught off guard by the backlash because it was the first time in his life and career that he felt the general public’s venom. The ramifications of the slap were not just for Chris; the Oscars were ruined for many people that night because of Smith.
Harvey named the long list of people affected by Smith’s actions on Oscars night, including the three female hosts and the co-executive producer. Smith ruined things for his Oscars because the night became about the slap.
Harvey said he liked the apology over all especially when the movie star apologized to Rock’s mother.
“He had to go away, man. See, he didn’t know what that was like,” said Harvey.
Harvey said Smith disappeared from the public eye and had never experienced dislike from the public before. Harvey says that is something he went through growing up because of a stuttering problem and other insecurities.
Harvey said he does forgive Smith because he has made mistakes before. The morning show agreed. Harvey said he is also glad that Smith did not apologize on “Red Table,” which made the apology more sincere.
