Rising Incidents of Theft
A new type of theft is spreading across the country, including the Las Vegas Valley. Thieves are targeting electric vehicle (EV) charging cables, leaving drivers frustrated and causing significant inconvenience. Local driver Johnson reported that his charging cables have been stolen ten times.
High Cost and Frustration
Johnson switched to an electric vehicle two years ago due to high gas prices and does not regret his decision, despite the challenges. He has faced numerous incidents causing major setbacks, with some charging sessions taking 45 minutes to three hours due to cable theft.
Impact on Charging Stations
Lamkin, vice president of EV America, stated that the company’s East Valley charging stations, where Johnson charges his car, have been hit multiple times. Thieves steal the cables for their valuable copper wiring. Each replacement costs hundreds of dollars, adding to the financial burden on the company.
Efforts to Combat Theft
Lamkin mentioned that their crime map shows 29 theft incidents this year alone at their properties near Johnson’s charging station. The company serves thousands of drivers weekly and considers it a critical mission to address the theft issue. They are working with local authorities to combat cable theft and are also installing more security measures.
Calls for More Charging Stations
Johnson expressed a desire for more charging ports to be installed, stating that it would be horrible if there were fewer charging stations due to theft. Lamkin confirmed that the company is collaborating with local law enforcement to address the issue and enhance security.
