Fort Worth DWI Crash: Good Samaritan Injured in Dual Collision (Video)

Early Monday morning, a series of collisions on the MLK Freeway near the Highway 287 southbound ramp in Fort Worth, Texas, resulted in several injuries and two DWI arrests. Fort Worth police say they are shocked that no lives were lost during the incidents, which involved two alleged intoxicated drivers and impacted multiple individuals, including a good Samaritan.

Fort Worth DWI Crash: Good Samaritan Injured in Dual Collision

First Incident: SUV Crashes into Barricade

The initial crash occurred around 2:30 a.m., when 26-year-old Rachel Hadley allegedly drove her SUV into a construction barricade while under the influence. Construction workers nearby witnessed the impact and quickly moved to assist Hadley, pulling their work truck behind her SUV to protect the scene and prevent further accidents. Fort Worth police later confirmed Hadley was suspected of driving under the influence, and her blood alcohol levels are currently under investigation.

Good Samaritan Injured in Second Collision

While construction workers and passersby were trying to secure the scene of the first crash, a second vehicle—a Chevy Malibu—arrived, driven by a 21-year-old male who was also allegedly intoxicated. As construction crews were assisting Hadley and watching traffic, the driver of the Malibu lost control and struck the work truck. The impact caused a significant secondary crash, further endangering the construction workers and passersby on the scene.

According to Fort Worth police spokesperson Officer Calzada, the Malibu’s collision was forceful enough to injure a good Samaritan who was helping direct traffic. The worker, standing outside the construction vehicle, was hit and thrown nearly 50 feet into the air due to the sheer impact. Emergency personnel quickly responded, providing on-site treatment for the man before he was transported to the hospital for further care.

Extraction and Hospitalization of Second Driver

The Chevy Malibu’s crash into the work truck was violent enough that both the driver and a passenger in the Malibu were trapped inside the wreckage. Firefighters had to cut them out of the vehicle to extract them safely. Both the driver and passenger suffered severe injuries and were immediately taken to the hospital. As of the latest updates, they are still undergoing treatment. The identity of the 21-year-old male driver remains undisclosed, pending further investigation and his release from medical care.

Police Demonstrate Effects of Impairment

In a bid to highlight the dangers of driving under the influence, Officer Calzada demonstrated the impairing effects of alcohol using “Drunk Buster” goggles. These goggles mimic vision impairment at blood alcohol levels over twice the legal limit, giving viewers a sense of the blurred, unfocused sight and impaired judgment experienced by intoxicated drivers. Calzada emphasized that impaired drivers lose their reasoning and motor control, making it extremely unsafe to operate a vehicle.

Ongoing Investigation and Pending Charges

Both drivers involved in the crashes face charges related to driving while intoxicated (DWI). Blood tests will further determine their blood alcohol levels at the time of the accidents. The 21-year-old male driver, who remains hospitalized, will be transferred to the Tarrant County Jail for booking once his treatment is complete. Fort Worth police will release additional information about him upon his formal booking.

Widespread Impact of Drunk Driving in North Texas

These incidents have served as a stark reminder of the dangerous consequences of driving under the influence. Officer Calzada and Fort Worth police are urging drivers across North Texas to take heed of this incident and understand the life-threatening risks of impaired driving. The multiple-vehicle crash, injuries to passersby, and destruction of property all underscore the unpredictable, far-reaching impact of a single moment of impaired judgment.

A Call for Caution

The Fort Worth police department’s response to this incident highlights a pressing need to prevent similar occurrences in the future. Officers continue to encourage all drivers to avoid driving under the influence, reiterating the irreversible damage and risk that impaired driving can bring to the individual driver and everyone else on the road. As the investigation continues, Fort Worth police are appealing to the community to make responsible choices, emphasizing that safe driving should always come first.

These tragic but avoidable accidents underscore a fundamental message: impaired driving endangers lives, and the repercussions can affect more than just the individual behind the wheel.
