Hangout Launches AI Music Creation Tool
Social music platform Hangout has taken a significant step in the music industry by introducing a generative AI feature called Turntable.AI. This innovation allows users to produce music simply by entering text prompts, joining other platforms like Udio and Suno in harnessing large language models for music creation.
Joseph Perla, the founder and CEO of Turntable Labs, explains that the platform will offer users the opportunity to generate a million short tracks for free, while longer compositions will require payment through Hangout’s token system. This experiment in pricing reflects the platform’s unique position as a social music service that integrates AI capabilities.
With over two million registered users, Hangout is the first streaming platform to combine AI music generation with a licensed catalog of tracks. Perla likens this moment to the emergence of ChatGPT, the AI chatbot that gained widespread recognition. He emphasizes the potential of AI to redefine how music is created and shared among users.
To power its AI feature, Hangout has secured licenses from thousands of record labels, although specific details regarding these partnerships have not been disclosed. The platform, which was launched in November 2024, enables users to engage in DJ activities within virtual rooms, play songs, and connect with both friends and new acquaintances. It operates under licenses from major music groups such as Universal Music Group, Sony Music Entertainment, and Warner Music Group, in addition to the independent rights group Merlin.
Perla previously co-founded Turntable.fm, a similar social music platform that closed in 2013 due to licensing challenges. With financial backing from notable investors including Founders Fund and Elizabeth Street Ventures, he has revived the concept in a new form with Hangout.
Hangout is not alone in the generative AI music space. Other platforms like Udio and Suno have also launched or secured licensing agreements to explore AI-generated music. Udio, which debuted in April 2024, has collaborated with Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group, while Suno recently inked a deal with Warner Music Group.
Aside from these emerging platforms, Spotify has announced its plans to develop AI music products, having partnered with major music groups and rights organizations. The company is in the process of establishing a generative AI research lab to create tools aimed at enhancing artist-fan interaction while ensuring fair compensation for artists.
