Singer John Legend has played a pivotal role in launching a new food pantry in Long Beach designed to aid pets whose owners are experiencing homelessness.
The Long Beach Multi-Service Center, known for offering a variety of services to the city’s homeless population, including medical assistance and employment support, is now addressing a critical but often overlooked need: feeding the pets of those living on the streets.
In response to this need, the center will provide free pet food to homeless individuals with animal companions.
“We see a lot of people that have pets out there,” said Paul Duncan, the manager of the Homeless Services Bureau. “Pets play a crucial role in their lives, offering a sense of well-being and unconditional love. Supporting these pets means supporting the people who care for them.”
The pantry is stocked with Kismet pet food, a brand co-founded by John Legend.
“People experiencing homelessness are often seen as a problem or an eyesore,” said the Grammy-winning artist. “But they are human beings who need love, care, and all the support we can offer. Their pets provide them with immense comfort, and helping these animals is an essential part of helping their owners.”
Dr. Kwane Stewart, the founder of Project Street Vet, is also a significant contributor to this initiative. As a veterinarian from San Diego, Dr. Stewart provides free care to pets living on LA’s Skid Row and other areas in the region.
“We aimed to create the best dog food on the market while also supporting some of the neediest pets,” Stewart said.
