**Winter Hazards Awareness Week: Get Your Car and Home Ready for Michigan’s Icy Grip**

As Michigan struggles through its first taste of winter weather this week, state officials are ramping up efforts to ensure residents are well-prepared for the season ahead. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has officially marked this week as Winter Hazards Awareness Week, urging citizens to take the necessary precautions against winter emergencies.

With icy roads and frigid temperatures expected throughout the coming months, Michigan State Police and the Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security are leading the charge in encouraging residents to act now. Clayton Cummins from MSP and the Department of Emergency Management joined us to share essential tips for winter preparedness both on the road and at home.

“Preparation is key,” says Cummins. “Every driver should ensure their vehicle is winter-ready.” He recommends checking tire pressure, replacing any worn-out tires with winter ones, and keeping an emergency kit stocked with essentials like blankets, water, and first-aid supplies. It’s also a good idea to keep a shovel, ice scraper, and jumper cables handy, just in case.

When it comes to home safety, Cummins advises checking heating systems, ensuring smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are functional, and having an emergency supply kit that includes food and medications prepared for at least three days. “Power outages can happen, so being ready can make all the difference,” he adds.

As Michigan faces the inevitable winter challenges, taking these proactive steps can help residents navigate through the cold months safely. Don’t wait for the snow to fall—prepare now to ensure you and your family are ready for whatever winter throws your way.
