Recently, Lakitha Hughes, associate director for Facilities Management won the position of International Secretary-Elect for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.
“When the results were presented during our virtual conference for the position, I was extremely overwhelmed with excitement,” says Hughes. “I immediately praised God and all the glory to Him, who made this all possible for me. I am extremely blessed to hold this position during our centennial year.
Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc., was founded on the campus of Howard University on January 16, 1920. Today, the membership roster includes more than 125,000 college-educated, dynamic, community service driven, diverse and professional women. Membership benefits include opportunities for professional development, personal development and sisterhood.
As International Secretary-Elect, Hughes will be primarily responsible for takin and recording the minutes at all meetings and called sessions. She will ensure that all information attained is organized, maintained effectively, and accurate.
When asked why she ran for this position, Hughes replied, “Prior to this role, I have served in many positions an on various committees for Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated. Particularly, I’ve held the position of secretary on the local level for four years, for the State of Mississippi for two years and on the regional level for four years. So, I have a vast amount of knowledge regarding this position.
She continued, “In 2016, I decided to seek the position on an International level and was unsuccessful. I decided to seek the office Internationally in 2016 and was unsuccessful. However, I continued to be patient and humble and I never lost focus of my goal- to serve my sisterhood on the highest level. I was raised with a wealth of wisdom that taught me to never give up, so I decided to seek the office again in 2020.”
Hughes will serve a two-year term ending in 2022. She has been a financial and active member of the sorority since her induction in 2000. The 20-year member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated was initiated into the Epsilon Theta chapter at Mississippi State University.
