## Hurricane Gabrielle Strengthens to Category 4; Two Additional Tropical Storms Possible in Atlantic

Hurricane Gabrielle reached Category 4 status on Monday with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph, located about 180 miles southeast of Bermuda and moving north at 12 mph. It is expected to turn northeastward by midweek while remaining over open water, passing east of Bermuda, which may experience rough surf, gusty winds, and rain. Swells from Gabrielle are impacting Bermuda, the U.S. East Coast from North Carolina northward, and Atlantic Canada, creating hazardous surf and rip currents. The National Hurricane Center is also monitoring two other tropical waves with potential development: one west-southwest of the Cabo Verde Islands with an 80% chance of forming within seven days, and another east of the Windward Islands with a 50% chance within seven days. The latter will cause gusty winds and showers in the Leeward Islands regardless of development.
