Frankie Crocker was a famous New York radio DJ

Frankie “Hollywood” Crocker (December 18, 1937, Buffalo, New York, USA – October 21, 2000, North Miami Beach, Florida) was a famous New York radio DJ. (Coined “Hollywood” for his keen sense of showmanship and self-marketing tactics.)According to popeducation.org, Crocker began his career in Buffalo at the AM Soul powerhouse WUFO (also the home to future greats Eddie O’Jay, Herb Hamlett, Gary Byrd and Chucky T) before moving to Manhattan, where he first worked for Soul Radio Station WWRL and later top-40 WMCA in 1969.He then worked for WBLS-FM as program director, taking that Radio Station to the top of the ratings during the late 1970s. He sometimes called himself the “Chief Rocker”, and he was as well known for his boastful on-air patter as for his off-air flamboyance. When Studio 54 was at the height of its popularity, Crocker rode in through the front entrance on a white stallion. In the studio, before he left for the day, Crocker would light a candle and invite female listeners to enjoy a candlelight bath with him. He signed off the air each night to the tune “Moody’s Mood For Love” by vocalese crooner King Pleasure.Crocker, a native of Buffalo, coined the phrase “Black contemporary” in the 1970s, a label for the eclectic mix of songs that he played. He was the master of ceremonies of shows at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and was one of the first V.J.’s on VH-1, the cable music video channel, in addition to hosting the TV series Solid Gold and NBC’s Friday Night Videos. As an actor, Crocker appeared in five films, including Cleopatra Jones, Five on the Black Hand Side, and Darktown Strutters. He is credited with introducing as many as 30 new artist to the mainstream including Manu Dibango’s “Soul Makossa” to American audiences. While both Gary Byrd and Herb Hamlett were influenced by Crocker, it is only Hamlett that always attributes his success to his mentor in Buffalo, Frankie Crocker. Frankie Crocker was inducted into the New York State Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame in 2005.

Nielsen Reveals the Modernization of AC Radio

href=https://www.theindustry.biz/move-over-nashville-new-yorkers-buy-most-country-albums/nielsen-logo/ rel=If you’ve noticed some changes on your favorite “lite rock” Radio Station over the past few years, your ears have not deceived you. A recent Nielsen BDSradio study of Adult Contemporary Radio Stations in the top 10 U.S. markets shows that this format airs 40% more current music now than it did five years ago. In addition, AC Radio Stations have drastically reduced the amount of music being played from the ’70s and before, and traded once core artists like Rod Stewart and Celine Dion for Kelly Clarkson and Pink.Nielsen BDSradio is a leading provider of monitored airplay services to the music and radio industries, as well as the company whose data powers the Billboard Hot 100, Billboard 200 Albums, and other Billboard charts. Nielsen BDSradio recently released a report on the modernization of Canadian AC radio, which found that the average era of AC Radio Stations in that country had become 12 years more recent over the course of five years. By comparison, the U.S. AC Radio Stations were only five years “newer” in five years time, but other significant changes had taken place.Similar to the recent Nielsen BDSradio report on Canadian AC radio, prepared for the Canadian Music Week conference, American AC Radio Stations are also relying less on older core artists in favor of songs from younger, contemporary performers. The Nielsen BDSradio report shows that in the U.S., nearly half of the Top 100 most-played AC artists from 2007 are no longer on the same list in 2012; 79% of 2007’s Top 100 AC artists have dropped in ranking over five years. The format’s top-five most-played artists now include Katy Perry, P!nk, Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga. The modernization of AC radio reflects the immense popularity of today’s hit music with adult audiences, and programmers unwillingness to cede artists like Adele or Katy Perry to Top 40 radio Radio Station s. It also reflects the rise of Oldies/Greatest Hits Radio Stations which have become more centered on the ’70s in recent years. AC Radio Stations have cut more than 60% of “Boomer generation” songs – from the 60’s and 70’s – from their libraries. However, songs from the 80’s remained static showing that AC radio is relu ctant to forfeit the music of that decade just yet.AC radio, both in Canada and America, is increasingly becoming a song-based, not artist-based, format. Five years ago it was not unusual for a Radio Station to play upwards of 28 titles by one artist. Today, only Madonna still sees an active library of more than 20 titles on AC Top 20 playlists.Often criticized for having too many commercial interruptions, AC radio is spending more time playing music today than it did five years ago. There is an average of 6:40 more minutes spent playing music , from 39:44 in 2007 to46:24 in 2012 per hour.Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems provides music research and monitoring services for the entertainment industry including Nielsen BDSradio, the only strategic tool designed for radio programmers. Nielsen BDS captures more than 100 million song detections annually on more than 1,900 radio Radio Station s, satellite and video channels in 176 markets across North America. Nielsen’s data on airplay, sales, and On-Demand streams is featured weekly in Billboard’s charts and is widely cited by numerous publications and broadcasters as the standard for music measurement.

You’re making it hard when the LAPD puts out an all points bulletin when two dog heads turn up in a dumpster. The police will drop everything to look for the killer of a dog but won’t put in the same time and resources when a Black life is lost. Black lives are important, our children matter.

“Former First African Methodist Episcopal Church pastor, now USC professor Reverend Cecil “Chip” Murray said, “This is a testing time. Not just for Florida, but for our nation. It is a vulgar society that ignores its youth.

It is a vulgar society that will mistreat the next generation that should carry on the heritage of our constitution. This is a trying time and each of us is on trial. To do nothing means we are guilty.

To do the wrong thing means we are guilty. To be in ignorance means that we are guilty. Rapper and actress Yolanda “Yo-Yo” Whitaker called out the hip-hop community to stand up for justice for Trayvon Martin.

“Hip-hip is 30 years old,” Yo-Yo told the crowd. “It’s a billion dollar industry. I know that we [rappers] have changed this world, but I encourage the entire industry to get involved and take a stand.

In hip-hop, we let a lot of names be called, but coon was never one of them. “Groups participating in today’s press conference and rally included: the Brotherhood Crusade, NAACP, SCLC, Mothers in Action, the Nation of Islam, and the National Council of Negro Women.

Kobe Bryant Says Today’s NBA Makes Him Nauseous

Kobe-Bryant-3In a small rant, Kobe Bryant spoke on today’s NBA. He didn’t hold back when he said, “It’s more of a finesse game, it’s more of small ball, which personally, I don’t really care much for. I like kind of smash-mouth, old-school basketball, because that’s what I grew up watching.”Bryant also said it “makes me nauseous. You can’t touch a guy without it being a flagrant foul. … The truth is, it (the physicality from the past) makes the players have to be more skillful. Nowadays, literally anybody can go out there and get to the basket, because you can’t touch ‘em.”I like the current state of the NBA but I loved the Jordan era. Kobe is right. Players back then were fundamentally more sound. Many of today’s players are mostly flash. Michael Jordan was the perfect combination of fundamental meets flash.
