In contrast, foods containing sugar, especially those high in fiber, such as fruits and whole grains, can mitigate these blood sugar spikes. “The fiber helps slow down the digestion process,” Dwyer adds, making the body’s reaction to sugar more gradual and manageable.

Moreover, beverages often don’t provide the same sense of satiety as solid foods, which can lead to overconsumption. “It’s easy to drink a large amount of sugar without feeling full, whereas eating solid foods tends to satisfy hunger more effectively,” Dwyer points out.
