Local 4’s Dr. Frank McGeorge recently delved into this pressing issue with registered dietitian Christina King from Henry Ford Health, shedding light on the implications of sugar consumption.

“While both drinking and eating sugar can lead to health issues, they affect our bodies in different ways,” King explained. According to her, liquid sugars—such as those found in sodas, juices, and sweetened teas—tend to be more harmful due to their rapid absorption into the bloodstream, which can result in spikes in blood sugar levels. “When you consume sugar in liquid form, it bypasses the body’s natural satiety signals, meaning you could consume more calories without even realizing it,” she added.

In contrast, foods that contain sugar often come with fiber, protein, and fat, which slow down absorption and help the body manage glucose levels more effectively. For example, eating a piece of fruit, despite its natural sugars, is typically healthier than sipping on sugary fruit juice. “The fiber in whole fruit aids digestion and mitigates the sugar rush,” King noted.

Experts agree that the average American consumes an alarming amount of sugar, much of it hidden in processed foods. Whether it’s a sugary drink or a sweet snack, awareness and moderation are crucial. King emphasizes, “It’s not just about reducing sugar intake; it’s about making smarter choices.”
