Jawn Murray Thrives During Hiatus: Wins Telly, Shines on Cooking Shows, and Magazine Cover

Jawn Murray, Executive Producer of The Sherri Show, Thrives During Show Hiatus

Wins Second Telly Award, Shines on Cooking Shows and Featured on Cover of Alma Mater Norfolk State University Magazine, “BEHOLD”

“The Sherri Shepherd Show” may be on its summer break, but the show’s executive producer Jawn Murray has shown no signs of slowing down. Murray is featured on the latest cover of his alma mater Norfolk State University’s magazine BEHOLD and recently won his second Telly Award for the Sherri Show.

In the career retrospective, the NAACP Image Award winner and two-time Telly Award winner shared with writer Anthony Tillman that one of the most-rewarding aspects of helping helm “Sherri” is the letters the show receives from viewers expressing how the positive energy and ingenuity of the show provides them with comfort during tough times.

“Knowing that we’ve created a space that gives someone the desire to fight another day touches my heart in a major way,” Murray shared with BEHOLD.

The Spring 2024, Volume 12 of BEHOLD is available now on Norfolk State’s website (https://www.nsu.edu/News/Behold), as well as official copies being mailed to alumni and faculty of the HBCU. BEHOLD will also be featured on campus at Norfolk State when students return for the Fall 2024 semester.

From cover features to culinary feats, Murray has kept the momentum going during the “Sherri Show” summer break. In addition to being featured on BEHOLD, Murray recently showcased his culinary skills on an episode of Cleo TV’s “Just Eats with Chef JJ.” On the episode titled ‘Afro-Caribbean Vibes,’ the self-proclaimed foodie helped Chef JJ prepare jerk oxtails, coconut peas and rice, and cabbage.

“People are surprised to learn that if I had not pursued my career in the entertainment industry, I would have gone to culinary school. Being able to cook with Chef JJ on TV was entirely too much fun,” says Murray. (https://mycleo.tv/video/afro-caribbean-vibes-feat-jawn-murray-just-eats-with-chef-jj/)

“Just Eats with Chef JJ” is the second cooking show that the New York-based host and TV producer has appeared on this year. In January, Murray was the subject of the hit Food Network series “The Delicious Miss Brown” hosted by Chef Kardea Brown. On the episode, titled ‘Aw, Shucks!,’ Chef Brown prepares a meal for Murray’s first-time visit to Charleston, South Carolina. He then learns to shuck oysters as part of a backyard meal with the TV chef. Encores airings of the show air in July and August this summer.

As a TV host, Murray led series for Travel Channel, NFL Network and EPIX (now called MGM+). As an ABC News contributor, he delivered brand-integration segments on “GMA3: What You Need To Know,” the afternoon companion to ratings leader “Good Morning America.” His original documentary concept, “Soul of a Nation: Black in Vegas” aired as a primetime special on ABC in 2023. Murray served as lead contributor, narrator and consulting producer for the news doc that is currently streaming on Hulu.

Dubbed “The Pop Culture Expert” by CNN’s Brooke Baldwin, Murray was once a fixture on cable news and has also directed and produced episodes of the TV One series “Uncensored.”
