Early Roots and Ascent in Radio

Growing up in Harlem, Raiford developed a passion for music at a young age—spinning records as a teenage DJ and later earning degrees from Morehouse College and Georgia State University. After his college years, he quickly distinguished himself in Atlanta’s music scene, becoming a top club DJ before moving into radio as an on-air mixer and eventually a Program Director at Hot 107.9. J1 went on to lead programming for Urban One (Radio One) in Indianapolis and Washington, D.C., where he drove WKYS 93.9 to the number one position and orchestrated major market events, honing the expertise that would define his approach to music curation.

Pioneering Programming at Pandora and SiriusXM

In 2019, J1 Raiford took a definitive step by joining Pandora as Head of Hip Hop Programming, ascending to Vice President of Music Programming across Pandora and SiriusXM’s hip hop and urban content. In this role, he reimagined artist development, playlist curation, and event experiences for the streaming era. J1 created signature series like “The SiriusXM Pandora Playback,” offering exclusive interviews and first listens with artists; “New Music Friday Top 3,” curating the hottest new releases; and “The Connect 4 Convo,” fostering meaningful conversations within the genre.

He was instrumental in launching the “Top Shelf” Hip Hop and R&B station and playlist, which became a central destination for millions of listeners seeking cutting-edge music and cultural context. J1’s initiatives bridged established and emerging talent, utilizing both data-driven insights and deep cultural knowledge to build genuine community and discovery for artists—particularly Black creators whose voices have shaped and defined modern music.

Championing Black Music and Mentorship

A constant theme throughout J1’s career is his devotion to authenticity, representation, and nurturing the next generation. He has led key partnerships, such as “Uninterrupted Radio” with LeBron James and Maverick Carter, advancing platforms that give artists direct connection to their audience. By building artist development programs and providing mentorship, J1 has empowered young industry professionals and championed broader access within historically exclusive spaces.

J1 also spearheaded events and panels designed to support Black youth curiosity and representation in media careers, displaying a unique blend of technical expertise and community leadership. His work keeps Pandora and SiriusXM at the forefront of platforms that not only stream music but uplift entire cultures.

Lasting Impact on the Hip Hop Landscape

Through visionary programming, innovative playlist creation, and the launch of exclusive content initiatives, Joshua “J1” Raiford has redefined what it means to curate hip hop in the digital age. By blending analytics with cultural intuition, he has made Pandora and SiriusXM leaders in the digital music revolution—helping new talent break through, ensuring lasting engagement with listeners, and preserving the integrity and celebration of hip hop and Black music. J1’s story is one of transformation, advocacy, and unwavering commitment to moving music—and culture—forward.
