**K-9 Injured in Southaven Chase After Traffic Stop Goes Awry**
SOUTHAVEN, MS – A routine traffic stop in Southaven took a dramatic turn on Wednesday when a wanted suspect fled, leading to a harrowing chase that resulted in injuries to a police K-9.
Officers initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle around 5 PM, suspecting the driver was wanted for previous crimes. However, the situation escalated quickly when the driver, identified as 29-year-old Jordan Lee, bolted from the scene on foot, prompting officers to give chase.
In a display of teamwork, Southaven’s K-9 unit was deployed to assist in the pursuit. The department’s trusted police dog, Axel, took off in pursuit of Lee, showcasing the high-speed agility that K-9 units are known for. However, during the chase, Axel sustained injuries, leaving his handlers and officers deeply concerned for his well-being.
Video footage from onlookers captures the intensity of the chase, illustrating the frantic moments as the officers attempted to apprehend Lee. After a vigorous foot pursuit through a nearby wooded area, the suspect was ultimately apprehended and is facing multiple charges, including fleeing law enforcement and resisting arrest.
“While we are relieved to have taken a wanted suspect off the streets, our thoughts are with our K-9 officer Axel,” said Southaven Police Chief Macon Moore. “Axel plays a critical role in our efforts to keep this community safe, and we are monitoring his recovery closely.”
Axel was taken to a local veterinary clinic for treatment and is expected to make a full recovery. The incident underscores the dangers faced by law enforcement and their K-9 partners on duty as they work tirelessly to maintain public safety.
