2026’s documentary slate is packed with deep dives into music legends—each telling stories of transformation, culture, and creativity.

Music documentaries have consistently offered more than just a glimpse behind the curtain. They capture pivotal cultural moments while providing intimate insights into the artists who shaped them. As the genre evolves, the upcoming slate of documentaries for 2026 promises to showcase incredible stories of transformation and legacy in the music world.

This year, fans can look forward to 11 compelling documentaries that highlight significant artists at critical junctures in their careers. These films are set to bring audiences closer to the stories behind the music they love.

Among the highlights is “Ann Wilson: In My Voice,” a documentary featuring the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and lead singer of Heart. Drawing from a wealth of personal archives—including home movies, journals, and rare footage—Wilson aims to present her life in her own words, sharing the story behind classic hits like “Crazy On You” and “Barracuda.” Although the release date remains unconfirmed, anticipation continues to build.

On a different note, Tamra Davis returns with “The Best Summer,” a documentary that revisits the indie-rock scene of the 90s through rare archival footage from an Australian music festival. Featuring bands like the Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth, the film serves as a nostalgic look back at an era that launched many acts into stardom. After its premiere at Sundance between January 22 and February 1, it’ll be available to stream online.

The late Marianne Faithfull’s life and career are the focus of “Broken English,” which includes contributions from notable figures like Tilda Swinton and Nick Cave. This documentary offers a nuanced portrayal of Faithfull’s triumphs and struggles, culminating in her acclaimed comeback album released in 1979. The U.S. theatrical release is set for March 20.

In another intriguing project, Joanna Natasegara explores the history of the Wu-Tang Clan’s one-of-a-kind album “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.” This documentary delves into the controversy surrounding the album’s sale, which fetched $2 million, and examines its implications for the value of music as art.

Billie Eilish is also ready to make waves with a new 3D documentary directed by James Cameron, set to release alongside her upcoming concerts. This project promises a visually stunning experience and is part of Eilish’s ongoing evolution in the industry.

Additionally, “Take That,” a Netflix documentary, revisits the English boy band’s journey from their rise in the 90s to their current status. Featuring interviews with current and former members, it promises to offer fans an insider’s view of the beloved group.

Among other documentaries, “Antiheroine” provides Courtney Love a platform to narrate her life story, while “The Moment” presents a stylized take on Charli XCX’s rise to fame. Paul McCartney’s journey post-Beatles is explored in “Man on the Run,” and Questlove’s documentary on Earth, Wind & Fire aims to contextualize their enduring legacy.

Lastly, “Bowie In Berlin” chronicles David Bowie’s transformative years in Berlin, showcasing the creative rebirth that led to his groundbreaking Berlin Trilogy. This film is anticipated to air on BBC in autumn 2026.

With this exciting lineup, 2026 is set to be a landmark year for music documentaries, offering fans deeper insights into the lives of their favorite artists.
