The IBMA Foundation’s just rolled out a scholarship aimed at nurturing talent for live music production. This initiative is set to empower the next generation of behind-the-scenes professionals.
The IBMA Foundation has unveiled a new scholarship specifically designed for students interested in live music production. Named the Planning Stages Scholarship for Live Music Production, it was established through the generosity of Claire Armbruster and Jeff Koontz, co-owners of Planning Stages, Inc., located in Brevard, North Carolina.
This scholarship aims to recognize the essential roles played by creative professionals in the live music industry, acknowledging the hard work that goes into making live performances successful. It’s open to students pursuing various educational paths, including college, community college, or vocational training, specifically in areas like live music event production and talent buying.
Armbruster highlighted her motivations behind the scholarship, stating that her career has been profoundly influenced by work done behind the scenes in the music industry. She expressed a deep appreciation for the planning, coordination, and problem-solving aspects of live events, which contribute to creating memorable experiences for audiences. Her commitment to supporting the next generation of industry professionals reflects a growing recognition of the importance of these behind-the-scenes roles.
In collaboration with the IBMA Foundation, Armbruster believes the partnership is a natural fit, given the foundation’s dedication to education and mentorship in the music industry. She aims to provide practical learning opportunities and promote sustainable careers for individuals who play vital roles in live music production.
The Planning Stages scholarship can be used for tuition, internships, and other educational expenses. The inaugural scholarship amount is set at $2,000 and will be awarded in August for the fall semester of the 2026-27 academic year. Interested applicants must submit their applications by June 1 to qualify for any scholarships hosted by the IBMA Foundation.
In a further commitment to the sustainability of this initiative, Armbruster and Koontz plan to establish an endowment at the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee in 2027. They encourage donations to support this scholarship from anyone involved in live music production or those who have enjoyed bluegrass festivals and concerts.
