What's the Consensus of Urban Industry Leaders on the Indsutry?

0

Radio Facts: This week, I talked to several prominent industry heads from radio and records who all pretty much said the same thing. The industry is indeed downsizing, getting rid of excess and making a concerted effort to run a tight(er) ship. They also stated the widespread panic is understand able considering how unpredictable the industry is right now but they all assured me, the industry will still be here and things should return to normal by the spring. They agreed there is going to be more and there is no need to worry about something that is out of your control (I know, easier said then done)… They also said what we have been hearing for a long time now, those who can multitask and are the most dedicated will most likely survive and resurface.

To that end, let me ad, urban radio is still in dire need of webmasters. I personally think it’s a HUGE mistake to let a corporation hand le your site and to avoid adding your particular market’s touch to the site. It’s very easy to find radio people and very easy to find webmasters but it’s almost impossible to find urban radio people who ARE webmasters. Urban radio, mark my words, is going to be FORCED to pay more attention to their websites by this summer, it’s one of the most ignored revenue streams in our industry.

CBS GM Names New Midday Talent at V103/Atl

The Industry Dot Biz:

Filed Under: “Editor’s Question” Elle is great I heard her while I lived in Atl but why is the General Manager picking on air talent? Kevin

Ludacris and Elle Duncan have one thing in common ¦they both worked with ryan cameron and now are on to bigger things.   Monday February 2nd Elle Duncan will start as the new Midday host from 10am-2pm on V-103.

Å“Weâ„¢re very much looking forward to having Elle as our new Midday host, says V-103/WAOK General Manager Rick Caffey.   Å“Our listeners love her so itâ„¢s a perfect and natural fit! Elle Duncan has dreamed about entertaining people since she was a small child singing and acting for her family.   Born in Atlanta, Elle had the opportunity to be involved in various plays, musicals and performing arts productions.   She attended McEachern High School and West Georgia College, majoring in broadcasting. In 2003, Elle was granted a great opportunity to intern for a year at 790 the Zone with the popular brother duo Å“The Two Live Stews . She gained a wealth of radio broadcasting knowledge during her internship and in 2005, she joined V-103 as the Afternoon Drive Å“Traffic Girl .   Her energy, quick wit, comic delivery and great chemistry with ryan cameron cemented her a permanent position on The ryan cameron Show in 2006.   Today at just 26 years old, Elle will provide a young, but mature, female perspective on a variety of topics during her show each day.

Why Was Smooth Jazz Really Smooth R&B Anyway? Magic 107.5 Deputs in Atl

0

Radio Facts: I remember listening to Smooth Jazz 107.5 when I lived in Atlanta and it was always “Smooth Jazz 107.5” but Luther Vand ross was not a Jazz artist neither was After 7 or Gerald Levert… I thought that perhaps the station was poorly programmed or perhaps they thought the listeners were just that stupid. The station literally put me to sleep at least the Wave in LA, ALSO not a “Smooth Jazz” station plays music a bit closer to the genre, from artists like Michael Franks and George Benson.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports Magic 107.5 has taken over for Smooth Jazz 107.5 and syndicated hosts Steve Harvey and Michael Baisden will move over there soon. For a time, 102.5 and 107.5 will simulcast and mid-day syndicated talk-show hosts Warren Ballentine and Al Sharpton will soon go away. Is it me or does it appear that the Al Sharpton era is over now that Obama is president? The simulcasting has not started yet. In addition, the station is changing the spelling it might actually be named Majic. I agree with AJC’s Rodney Ho, Why change the spelling? The station is going to be competing with WALR, a station that for the life of me, I don’t understand how in the hell they can currently run neck and neck with V-103. It’s no secret the Radio DJs at WALR don’t make as much as the Radio DJs at V. Fook it, I am a “payist” a new word, I kill me. I believe if the station is running neck and neck with the top station and the top station is paying good money, WALR should at LEAST give the announcers a nice raise. ALR has been making an incredible move up the PPM scale and they are starting to spank that V103 ass…. It will be interesting to see how the new (well reformatted) Majic fairs as a third competitor.

WHAT? Thriller Director Wants Jackson Off Broadway

0

Radio Facts: For those of us who work in the industry, we know that back in 1982, Micheal Jackson probably thought up the whole concept for Thriller but director John Land is was probably just hired as the director to make it official. Needless to say, that’s not stopping Land is from suing Jackson for back royalties and to prevent the embattled King of Pop from negotiating a deal to adapt Thriller for the stage. Which is actually an interesting idea.

Land is is saying that Jacko has no right to shop the project without his approval, Land is is asking the court for a declaration that would prevent the deal from going forward unless he signs off on it which of course he will not due until he is paid from the back royalties he is suing for. However, it’s reported that play purveyors The Nederland er Organization on a Thriller musical have already forked over $400,000 to Jackson who is planning to oversee every aspect of the creative process. THIS is why Land is is pissed off (laugh)… probably hasn’t worked in years.

Land is is claiming he is owed 50% of all profits but is the $400gs cosidered a “profit.” Land is’ company Levitsky Productions, sued Jackson last week in Los Angeles Superior Court, accusing Jackson of "fraudulent, malicious and oppressive conduct."…

PluggedIn-Public radio goes hi-tech to raise cash

0

Radio Facts:

U.S. public radio stations are looking to thumb-sized, high-tech gadgets to help raise money and make it easier for on-the-go listeners to access their programming.

A small device known as the Radio Bookmark allows listeners to electronically jot down specific news stories, talk-shows, music and other broadcasts for later review over the Internet. They can email links to those broadcasts to their friends.

The radio bookmark, which looks like a car-door remote control, logs the time of the show a user wants to pull up. At home, a search engine accessed through a website checks to see what the station was broadcasting at that time and delivers the audio recording over the Internet.

"It's kinda neat. You just press a button. Then you take it and plug it into your computer and up comes the story," said Mike Steffon, director of marketing for Boston-based public radio station WBUR.

It is useful for somebody tuning in from their car who arrives at their destination in the middle of an interesting broadcast and wants to finish listening to it later. Others use it when they are interrupted while listening at home or at work.

"It's for busy folks who don't have time to listen to a full story. They listen to a little bit of it and bookmark it for later," said Chris Ranck, a producer at Pubic Radio Delmarva in Salisbury, Maryland , who uses it himself.

While each of the 33 public radio stations across the United States that currently offers a radio bookmark sets its own price for the device that fits on a key chain, the stations generally offer it to listeners who make a $120 donation.

That includes a one-year subscription to the Web-based service that links users to the programs they have bookmarked.

Radio Delmarva offers two radio bookmarks for $150.

STATIONS NEED FUNDS

It is important for public radio stations to offer enticing premiums because they would not have enough money to keep broadcasting without support from their listeners.

In particular, the product speaks to a station's most loyal listeners.

"If you're a WBUR or National Public Radio news junkie, it's a great little gadget," Steffon said.

The device, which Lafayette, Indiana-based Sky Blue Technologies started selling last year, stand s out from other items that public radio stations have traditionally offered in exchange for donations — an assortment usually comprised of T-shirts, coffee mugs, books, CDs, DVDs, gift certificates and concert tickets.

Sky Blue was founded by Chris Baker, an entrepreneur and electrical engineer who founded a software company that he sold to Pitney Bowes Inc (PBI.N). After six years with Pitney Bowes, he decided it was time to start up a new company

Houston radio duo Dean and Rog are leaving 93.7 FM

0

The Industry Dot Biz: >Dean Myers and Roger Beaty, hosts of the Dean and Rog morning drive-time show on Clear Channelâ„¢s KKRW (93.7 FM), will move their show June 1 to Cox Radioâ„¢s KHTC (107.5 FM), Cox Radio announced Tuesday.

The impending move was announced after the duoâ„¢s Tuesday morning show on the Arrow. It was not immediately clear if the two will return to the air today or will sit out the remainder of their contract with Clear Channel before making the move to K-Hits.

Myers and Beaty remain under contract through the end of February, and they declined comment Tuesday through their agent, Eliot Ephraim.

The move signals a major financial commitment by Cox Radio in the midst of the current economic downturn, but Mark Krieschen, vice president and market manager of Coxâ„¢s four Houston stations, said the Dean and Rog show is a proven winner that he believes will pay off in listeners and revenue.

Å“This is a move that weâ„¢ve made for the future, Krieschen said. Å“People are still looking for great entertainment and great content, and Dean and Rog will provide this for our audience. The key is local. We will have local talent on our radio stations.

Scott Sparks, who currently hosts K-Hitsâ„¢ morning drive show, will be moved to afternoon drive, Krieschen said. He said current afternoon drive host Kevin Charles will not be retained in the stationâ„¢s lineup.

Eddie Martiny, market manager for Clear Channel Houston, was not immediately available for comment on whether Myers and Beaty will continue on 93.7 for the remainder of their contract. Options could include airing highlights shows or moving another Clear Channel show, perhaps the Walton and Johnson or Outlaw Dave shows on KPRC (950 AM), to morning drive on the Arrow.
