Regional Programming? Possible?

0

Radio Facts: width=As I predicted several months ago, looks like we are headed towards a new era of programming. The industry has been testing how well programmers can hand le multi-formatted stations in one market for a while and it appears to be a natural progression. I’m not sure if the Music Director’s role will increase to report to Regional PDs but it seems likely. The latest situation is in Los Angeles where KIIS PD John Ivey just picked up not one but TWO additional stations. He will now hand le the recently vacated PD seats of KHHT’s R Dub and KBIG’s Chachi Denes. Lawd, I would not want to be in Ivey’s shoes. Talk about not having a life… I’m sorry, that’s a LOT of work.

Arbitron to Increase Cell-Phone-Only Sample Target in all PPM markets

0

Radio Facts:

12.5 percent target set for year-end 2009, 15 percent by year-end 2010;
Address-based sample frame introduced for cell-phone-only recruiting in all markets;
Diary markets on schedule for cell-phone-only sampling starting Spring 2009

Arbitron Inc.   announced today that it will increase the sample target for cell-phone-only households in all Portable People MeterTM markets to 15 percent by year end 2010. In an interim step, the current target of 7.5 percent will be raised to 12.5 percent in PPMTM markets by year-end 2009.

Å“Arbitron has developed, tested and is presently implementing an address-based sampling method to identify and contact cell-phone-only households,” said Bob Patchen, chief research officer, Arbitron Inc. “This new method is more efficient than the manual dialing procedures we had been using and thus allows us to substantially increase the number of CPO persons included in our panels. We are also retaining the rand om-digit-dialing (RDD) sampling method for land line homes because that approach enables telephone contact with a higher percentage of land line homes not listed in telephone directories. These unlisted land line households are more likely than listed ones to contain Hispanics, African-Americans and young adults. The better response achieved with telephone contact can improve the overall representation of these groups in our PPM samples.

Å“Increasing the number of cell-phone-only households in our PPM samples is an important element in our ongoing programs to enhance the participation of 18-34 year olds of all races and ethnicities, said Owen Charlebois, president, Technology and Research & Development. Å“As the number of households that can be reached only by cell-phone continues to grow, Arbitron will update its methodologies to better include this important segment of the population.

For the New York PPM radio ratings service, Arbitron has already announced that it would increase the cell-phone-only sample target to 15 percent by July 2010.

Warner Bros. Plans Job Cuts Across All Divisions – 01/21/2009

0

The Industry Dot Biz: warner bros. continued the run of large media companies reacting to the economic climate by cutting jobs, saying it would eliminate about 7.5% of its existing workforce; it will not fill 200 more open positions. The cuts–which the company called "a last resort"–will come across all divisions, including the TV production and sizable syndication sales operations.

From one perspective, the Time Warner-owned company is reducing the size of its global 8,000-person workforce by 10%–if the 200 positions that go unfilled are factored in.

"We are very sad to announce that based on the global economic situation and current business forecasts, the studio will have to make staff reductions in the coming weeks in order to control costs," said top executives Barry Meyer and Alan Horn in a company memo. "This was a very difficult decision to make, and one that was not made easily. Despite the fact that the company performed solidly in 2008, this decision reflects changes necessary for stability and growth going forward."

The memo did say the company intends to make the cuts without "negatively affecting our divisions' ability to conduct business."

warner bros. declined to break down how the 600 jobs cut would be apportioned–in addition to TV, it operates a large and highly successful film studio. "The Dark Knight" was one of its big 2008 hits. The company is looking to outsource some back-office functions.

The TV studio produces prime-time network hits such as "Without a Trace" and cable successes such as "The Closer." But longtime hit "ER" is set to go off the air in the next few months.

At least two industry trends could hurt Warner Bros.' TV production business in the near future. With NBC adding a Jay Leno show in the weekly 10 p.m. hour and other networks possibly trying similar maneuvers, the hours for potentially scripted series warner bros. could be cut. And while warner bros. does have some reality-TV stalwarts, there are a slew of studios in that production game.

warner bros. syndication sales operations include first-run shows such as "TMZ" and "Tyra Banks" and off-network fare such as "Two and a Half Men" and "The Closer."

OH NO: Group says radio host owes them money

0

Radio Facts: The director of the Boys and Girls Club of Vineland claims local radio personality Brian “Corky” Warren, a Pittsgrove Township resident, stiffed the organization for more than $2,000.

Chris Volker, executive director for the non-profit, filed papers in small clams court last year in Salem County in an attempt to recoup money that Warren, a former WVLT Cruisin 92.1 radio host, allegedly told the Boys and Girls Club he would pay them to supply entertainment for a charity event last spring.

“It was agreed that Corky Warren would pay for Jerry Blavat (a Philadelphia radio personality) if we celebrated Corky’s birthday and honored him at the event with a roast,” Volker said Friday.

Volker said the event went off without a hitch, but the Boys and Girls Club was never paid more than a $500 deposit from Warren for Blavat’s appearance. Volker claimed Warren wrote a check for the balance due, but stopped payment on that check.

“We had to pay $2,100 out of our own pockets. This was a fund-raiser for kids,” he said.

Black airwaves help dial in new Prez

0

Radio Facts:

[ad#bet-300]

Twenty or so years ago, I was talking with Jack Gibson, a black radio pioneer, and he was detailing the power black radio had developed.

It introduced whole styles of music – like, say, rock ‘n’ roll or, later, rap. It mobilized communities – as the Million Man March proved a couple of years later. Most important, Gibson said, it had become a megaphone for voices that still were too often ignored. “Jack the Rapper” died in 2000, but his words will be echoing through Washington, D.C., around noon today, when Barack Obama is scheduled to be sworn in as America’s 44th President.

Obama didn’t run as a “black” cand idate, and it was the efforts of many people and institutions that got him elected. But black radio was there, start to finish, in helping push America to this rather amazing moment in our history. Way back in the early days of the civil rights movement, black radio became one of the first forums where black voices were given a microphone and taken seriously. That role was reprised in this election during, for instance, the controversy over the Rev. Jeremiah Wright – even though black radio reflected a wide range of opinions on what was going down. When Jack Gibson signed on the air at the country’s first black-owned radio station in 1949, he was saying, “We can do this.” In 2008, we did.
