TOM JOYNER AND STEVE HARVEY ALERT! New Black Radio Station to Replace WAMO in Pittsburgh?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey have probably already started calling this man (laugh)… PLEASE NO MORE SYNDICATION can we have LOCAL community station in Pittsburgh that caters to the locals PLEASE! Let me program that station.

Before his friend Harvey Adams died, media mogul Eddie Edwards spoke with him about about finding a way to replace the loss of WAMO, the city’s last Black radio station. And at Adams’ funeral, Edwards said he promised he would do it.
EDDIE EDWARDS

Now it appears, Edwards is just days away from fulfilling that promise. He told the New Pittsburgh Courier he is still nailing down some loose ends, but plans to hold a press conference making a formal announcement early next week.

“Don’t be surprised if I announce that I have negotiated a deal to buy a property and put a Black radio station back on the air,” he said. “The numbers of African-Americans in radio have diminished since deregulation in 1996. Radio has done a horrible job employing minorities in this town. That has me fired up. I am hopeful to have something formal about it in a few days when I will call a formal press conference with all concerned.”

Edwards said he was “doing fine in retirement” until WAMO was sold in May. He praised former owner Ron Davenport for keeping it going as long as he did in the face of flagging advertising income.

“With no one doing anything to replace it, I got even more upset,” he said. “It’s a ‘Black out,’ there’s no news and information about and for the community. There are elections coming up and, right now, we have no input.”

Edwards said the lack of a Black station not only makes the city look bad, but is also bad for business and for attracting residents.

“It’s missed by everyone, not just African-Americans,” he said. “Can you imagine people looking at Pittsburgh for relocation asking, ‘Where’s the Black station?” and hearing there is none? We’re the only major metropolitan city without a Black radio station. We have 27 percent African-Americans in the city and, 13 percent in the county–that’s an audience that can’t be ignored.” [source]

EXTRA MEAT: WEUP Radio Host Talks about Outrageously Obese Southern Blacks

0

The Industry Dot Biz:

No Southern comfort in obesity
For many blacks in the South, healthy living is at odds with the culture
By David Person

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. “” We Southerners are proud of our cuisine, but we could do without the distinction of once again being the most obese region in the country.

A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention concluded what many Americans have seen, and known, for years: Obesity is a major problem in the USA, but especially in the South. And African Americans in the South (like me) are the group with the highest obesity rates.

Alabama native Ronald Wyatt, a doctor of internal medicine and a fellow at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement at Cambridge, Mass., summed up the study this way: For every 100 obese whites in the South, there are 151 obese blacks.

“As a people, we have an obesity problem,” Wyatt said recently on my radio show.

The study concluded that 37% of Southern blacks are obese, but in the great state of Alabama where I live and in Mississippi, it’s a touch higher: 40%.

Liping Pan, the epidemiologist who’s the lead author of the study, believes that blacks and Hispanics “” who have the second-highest obesity rates “” have a few things in common that feed unhealthy lifestyles. Neither group has adequate access to safe places, such as gyms or health clubs, that promote physical activity. Pan also says healthy food choices are often out of the reach of these folks. And then there’s perception and the social pressures that do or don’t come with weight gain.

“Black and Hispanic women are more accepting of their own body size than white women,” Pan said in an article published by HealthDay News. “They are happy with their weight and less likely to try to lose weight.”
The 4,000 calorie meal

Even though I know plenty of black women who complain about their weight, the folks who have grooved to Sista Big Bones by neo-soul singer Anthony Hamilton might see the problem here. Or the fans of the Tyler Perry comedies House of Payne and Meet the Browns on TBS would understand what pop culture is saying about obesity. Both shows, which are about the escapades of blended black families, have been bona fide ratings successes. And on both, the male and female lead characters are undeniably overweight.

No matter how entertaining, the cementing of these stereotypes isn’t healthy. Wyatt sees the weight problem up close when visiting his relatives in Perry County, in what we call L.A. “” Lower Alabama.

“Once we get there, we have a meal that is absolutely unbelievable,” Wyatt said. “I will have “” no exaggeration “” probably a plate with 4,000 calories on it. And my relatives will say to me, ‘Aw, you’re not eating much at all today. You should eat more than that.’ The culture part of it is if you’re not on the big side, folks where I’m from down in Perry County say you’re not healthy. Healthy to them means you’re not big enough.” By comparison, Wyatt said that a person with a healthy diet should consume no more than 2,000 calories a day.

The discussion of African Americans and weight took center stage this summer when President Obama picked Dr. Regina Benjamin of Bayou La Batre, Ala., to be his surgeon general nominee. Many pundits skipped over her stellar accomplishments “” a MacArthur “genius grant,” the first African-American woman appointed to the American Medical Association’s board of trustees, her service to the poor residents “” to play the fat card.

True, Benjamin is not Halle Berry-thin. But neither, as Wyatt pointed out, was former surgeon general C. Everett Koop. Besides, there’s another way to look at what it could mean to have an African-American surgeon general who is overweight. Benjamin can use her weight issues to give the office more relevance and meaning than ever, especially for blacks and others who share her struggles.

Maybe she can give guidance and hope to people such as Alexand er Draper and Jerri Gray. Draper, a 14-year-old boy from South Carolina, weighs 555 pounds. Gray, his mother, is facing criminal charges because the state believes she didn’t do enough to prevent the morbid obesity that threatens his health.
Mounting health risks

Those of us who are overweight, whether mildly or morbidly obese, are at greater risk for heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes. And now experts say we should add another life threat to the list: cancer.

“Cancer thrives in fat,” said Donna Green-Goodman, a national ambassador for the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. Green-Goodman, who is a breast cancer survivor, said the extra fat can affect hormone levels, which then increase the risks for many types of cancers.

This is the message that all Americans, but especially African Americans, need to hear. Obesity doesn’t have to be the cause of poor health or premature death for us.

Thankfully, some people are beginning to listen. The last time Wyatt visited Perry County, he said his great aunt, Mary McGlothin, who is obese, told him that she had made some changes.

“I got the sugar (diabetes), but what I know now is that I can still eat the same foods I’ve been eating all my life,” she said. “I just have to eat less.”

FINALLY, Black Radio Hostess Audrey Chapman Explains why 44% of Black Men Never Marry

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Kudos to WHUR’s hostess/Therapist Audrey Chapman for telling the truth. I have to add here many black men don’t have an example of what marriage is, we didn’t grow up with fathers. If 44% of black men never marry, it has to damn near be DOUBLE that for black men who don’t have a parental relationship with their children either. Many brothers, that I know, blame the child’s mother for that. (Lawd, I can see the comments coming in now)

If you are black and love someone – or hope to love someone – who is black, this meeting was for you. “We were better off finding a partner during the slavery period,” Audrey Chapman told the stand ing-room-only crowd at the “Single Women, Unmarried Men: What Has Happened to Marriage in the Black Community?” session at the Congressional Black Caucus conference last week.

Marriage is good for people, said Ms. Chapman, an author, licensed family therapist and host of “The Audrey Chapman Show” on WHUR 96.3 FM.

On average, marriage means two incomes, even if one is smaller than the other, she said. Marriage means the father is in the home, which is good for the kids. Marriage means men are healthy because their wives “have a vested interest” in keeping them in tiptop shape.

And yet, statistics about the black family tell a stark story. Although for generations the vast majority of black children were raised by their two parents, this measure dipped as low as 35 percent in 2004 and today is about 40 percent.

Nearly 44 percent of black men are “never married,” which is higher than Hispanic men (40 percent), Asian men (33.4 percent) and white men (27.4 percent), said Ms. Chapman.

She asked the crowd, “Why is that?” When the mostly female audience yelled back “prison” or “unemployed,” (they didn’t say “DL”????) Ms. Chapman was ready. That’s not the whole story, she said. There are many, many black men with a professional degree, title, office, suit, tie and a BlackBerry. They just don’t have a wife, she said. Why is that? Taking a deep breath and looking straight at the women, Ms. Chapman said it begins with them.

“I always start my [radio] show with the same question, ‘How’s your relationship with yourself? ” she said. “If you are in a funky place with yourself” – you are unreliable, you are inconsistent with your own values – if you are unhealthy and not taking care of your body, your mind, praying, then you can’t make the good decisions,” she said. “You draw from where you are.”

Secondly, besides getting ones own house in order, black women have got to be willing to heal themselves and let go of their baggage, “whatever it is.” “We all got it,” the divorced counselor added.

Another step is to face the biggest reason black women – especially ones with high education, money and status – are at high risk for going through life alone: their attitude.

Without even realizing it, Ms. Chapman said, black women can adopt attitudes that chase away the very love and happiness they seek.

Contempt for men (“all brothers are dogs”) is an example, she said in her book, “Seven Attitude Adjustments for Finding a Loving Man.” Rage (“the last man hurt me, so you better watch out”) is another. Materialism or superiority (“No masters degree? Get lost”) is yet another.

Other relationship-crushing attitudes are trying to dominate the relationships and /or the man, be a smother-mother with the man, or talk or behave in a way that reflects desperation.

And because Ms. Chapman was already roiling the audience, she threw out one last piece of advice.

Be more flexible about your dating pool, she told the black women.

Black women “are the only group of people who are devoted to a group of people who are not devoted to them,” she said. “Black women need a rainbow coalition.” This two-hour seminar, hosted, with passion, by D.C. Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, featured a second powerful speaker, who talked at length about the marriage of President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama. Come back next Tuesday for more. WHAT IN DE FOOK? Al Sharpton is Dating LisaRaye? Is There a Pre-Nup for Dating?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: OK, this makes sense on both parts. Al is tired of dating old women with guts and beards and Lisa’s purse is empty. Al, PUT YOUR MONEY IN A SAFE PLACE NOW!!!! Always walk BEHIND Lisa when going down the stairs… Hide your insurance policies over your sister’s house.

Post Below Courtesy of YBF

“Here’s what we know: A few weeks ago our source (a MAJOR publicist in the industry who shall remain nameless) told us that Al and LisaRaye–both barely divorced–are indeed together now. When we asked the obligatory “WTF?! Why?” The answer is because Lisa knows she’s not getting onto any of these “society and political” events without a man who could bring her along. She’s also starved for attention from the media–surprise surprise–so Al is her “In” into that world. And Al–well he’s just happy to say he can have a chick that looks like LisaRaye on his arm and whose perm looks better than his.

We didn’t believe it at first, but at the Congressional Black Caucus events this weekend in DC–Mr. Sharpton was indeed coupled up with LisaRaye as he brought her as his date to every event. In the above pic, they were boo’d up at a Gala afterparty at Toscana West. And below, we spotted them at the Gala together with friends. I mean holding hand s, boo’d up, everything. Shocker…we know. Austin DJ robbed outside South Austin Radio Station, Posts Video of Injuries?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: A popular Austin dj was robbed outside his radio station.

Police say Bobby Bones, the morning dj for KISS-FM, was walking through the parking lot of Clear Channel radio in South Austin just after 4 a.m. when someone called out to him, then chased him. Bones tripped and fell, injuring his knee and shoulder.

The thief grabbed Bone’s laptop and took off.

Bones posted video of his injuries on YouTube. “Look at this — look at my shoulder. (My) shoulder’s jacked up… freaking feet are jacked up… lost my shoes when I ran from that dude, they’re all cut up and stuff,” Bones said.

Those who live and work in the area say the incident doesn’t have them worried about their own safety.

Justin Greenfield works late night hours at the Stompin’ Grounds Coffee and Cocktail Lounge, which is close to where Bones was robbed.

“The police have done a really good job down here. You’ll see them patrol up and down every two three minutes at nighttime, so I think that’s really kept things pretty calm around here,” he said.

Austin Police Corporal Scott Perry says if you do work in the early morning or late night hours, use common sense — stay aware of your surroundings, park in a well-lit area and have security or a coworker walk you to your car.

“No matter how safe and clean a neighborhood may be, there’s still going to be that criminal element that preys on innocent victims,” Perry said.

WHAT? You KNOW Something’s Wrong When Industry VETS Admit There are TOO many Old Men in the Industry!

0

You know, when I come across a great story in another trade, and the only ones I really read are Radio Business Report, Radio Ink and Radio-Info, I, unlike the other pu..y trades, will give them credit. There was a GREAT story in RBR yesterday about the lack of new blood in the industry. Something that I have said on many occasions in The Industry Dot Biz . That translates, especially in radio to dates shows and dated syndication too. I’m a middle age man and even I admit, we need new blood in the industry across the board on ALL formats. Here’s the story below courtesy of RBR.

If there was one recurring theme at last week’s NAB Radio Show in Philadelphia, it was that radio leaders are well outside of the most attractive demos ““ and getting older. But consolidation and the current recession have made it difficult to hire and grow the leaders of tomorrow.

Regent Communications CEO Bill Stakelin raised the issue in the Radio Group Heads Super Session, putting himself among those radio executives who are getting “long in the tooth.”

The same concern was expressed over and over by speakers in the session called “Radio Stimulus Package.”

“We are fast becoming an industry of old men,” said Larry Rosin, President, Edison Media Research, excluding the only female and younger panelist, Heidi Raphael, Vice President Corporate Communications, Greater Media.

“We have to raise the quality of programming,” declared Bill Figenshu, President, Broadcast Operations and Development, Peak Broadcasting. He complained that program directors are currently managing too many stations, leaving them with little time for real innovation. He called for efforts to bring in more young people. “It’s time for radio to make stations we are proud of,” he said.

Raphael called on broadcasters to expand their outreach ““ not just going to colleges for recruiting, but also to high schools and junior high schools to get students interested in radio. “We need to be growing our talent now for the future,” she said.

“We have stopped investing in ourselves, so why do we expect anybody else to invest in radio, to use radio?” asked veteran morning host John DeBella, WMGK-FM Philadelphia. He suggested putting young staffers in charge of programming HD2 and HD3 channels, comparing it to the situation decades ago when young people were allowed to program the FM stations that no one cared about while the AM cash cows drove business. “Let’s build a farm team,” he declared.

“Stop nostalgically looking back at the good old days,” said Fred Jacobs, President, Jacobs Media. He lamented the lack of strategic thinking in radio and declared that programming for PPM, because it measures audience minute by minute, is killing innovation. “It’s personalities that people care about,” Jacobs noted. But who is developing the new personalities that radio needs for the future?

John Parikhal, CEO, Joint Communications Corp., had harsh words for the current leaders of the largest radio groups. “Stop lying to yourselves,” he said. Parikhal declared that the top people have made mistakes and that none of the new initiatives implemented in recent years have worked. “Kill all czars,” he proclaimed, because rule by czars ““ top-down management ““ always fails. Instead, innovation has to come from the lower ranks and move up in the organization.

RBR-TVBR observation: At some point the broadcasting industry (OK, this is a bigger problem in radio, but it also applies to TV) is going to have to spend some money and recruit some of the best and brightest of the new generation.

That is obviously hard to do in the current economic climate. With some of the biggest players dancing as fast as they can to avoid Chapter 11 (and certainly some will end up there), spending more money is not something being talked about at many radio groups.

At some point, someone is going to have to actually invest in the product being put out on radio stations or they will just watch the value of their properties decrease. The capital structure of the radio industry is a mess right now, but that mess will be cleaned up ““ one way or the other. Groups will find new investors or merger partners to de-leverage, convert debt to equity to de-leverage or head to bankruptcy court and emerge de-leveraged.

Once the balance sheets are back in line, the radio companies had better invest in new people and new ideas. Otherwise, they’ll be back starring at the same financial mess again.

If your company has already made the tough moves to clean up the balance sheet ““ or never got overleveraged in the first place ““ now is the time to become a new radio leader. Focus less on cash flow margins and more on growth. Go out and compete with the new media companies to hire innovative young talent. Give them some latitude to try new things on digital platforms ““ online, HD Radio, mobile, and whatever else you can find.

Nurture that new talent and position your company to be a media leader. You’re not going to get there by hanging out in the bar at NAB conventions reminiscing about the days when you almost got fired for what you put on the air on an FM station in the 1970s.

Bottom line: It is time not to rethink this Fall NAB event but time to pack the bags and move… Move the event with the Spring conference and deliver content sessions that are relevant to today’s media business. And not putting a half  a dozen  sessions in the same time slot. More is not better.

It is time to get the CEO’s off the stage and put them in the audience in learning sessions by having key panels with experts in the field of digital etc. By the way, we will not find these experts in the radio or television business as many or most are still in the analog business.

The challenge moving forward is to push the envelope with creative ideas working now. NAB as an association is not at total fault as their mission is lobbying not sales, programming, digital, etc.   This is where the RAB and TVB have to kick in and again we as broadcasters have to reach across the aisle and work together.

Entering into 2010 now is the time to reinvent our radio and television medium. RBR-TVBR has a number of ideas if any member of the NAB board or RAB and TVB wish to listen as our job is to work with and help broadcasters daily as we too are broadcasters.

Core DJs Tony Neal Addresses Mother of his Alleged Daughter that put him on Blast

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Tony Neal, according to sources is no stranger to putting people on Blast, this time the shoe is on the other foot as the alleged mother of his 13 year old daughter has exposed him in the worst way by sending the scorching letter below to a plethora of popular blogs. Falisha Hopkins, the girl’s mother’s quote is below…

“Just when I thought this BITCHASS NIGGA couldn’t sink any lower, he fools me again.   I don’t know where to start with this deadbeat.   I have been dealing with this sperm donor for 13 unfortunate years; the only great thing I got out of being with his BITCHASS is my beautiful daughter.   I have never met a more selfish lowdown man oops I mean little boy in all my life.   Ladies, ladies, ladies, please pick and choose your child’s father wisely!!   Now I won’t bore you with the previous years, hell the current is bad enough!First off, I have never met a person who is so quick to point the finger at other people as opposed to looking at himself; hand s down TONY NEAL wins that award.   I will start with last week and go from there, this nigga has his whole schedule blasted on his MySpace page, which my daughter frequents often to see where he is!   His BITCHASS always comes to ATL, where we live.   He never sees his daughter when he comes here; as a matter of fact he was here last week which is the reason for this blast.   He tells my daughter he will see her when he gets here and take her shopping (mind you he has not seen her in 2 years and has not paid child support in months!), now I already know he’s a lying black bastard so I just shrug my shoulders and keep it moving.   He gets here and talks to my daughter and as usual rushes her off the phone, to my surprise he answers his phone the next day when she calls too, wow 2 in a row imagine that.   By the third and fourth day he never answers his phone and once again leaves ATL without so much as an hour spent with his child, now mind you he visits ATL often. Now by the third day I’m ready to kick his fooking head in because now my child is walking around sad as hell and there is nothing worse than a sad child and you can’t change their mood.   When your child constantly ask you why their dad won’t take care of them, why they don’t see them, why they don’t care it begins to piss you off!   Now my daughter is 13 she has become quite wise about her daddy, no more sugar coating this bullsh…, TONY NEAL is a piece of sh… point blank!   Now I guess it was building up inside my daughter so she sent him an email.   Below is the conversation they had by email.   THE SOB tells my daughter not to call him anymore!   WHAT KIND OF FOOKED UP CRAZY ASS BULLSh… IS THAT!   You tell your own child not to call you anymore; he’s more like his crack head momma than I thought.

Now this sh… is g oing to blow your mind.   I erased over $20,000 dollars in back child support this BITCHASS nigga owed me; yeah that’s right 20 thousand dollars!!!!!!!!! How many women do you know does that sh…!!!!   I agreed to do this only if he continued to pay his current child support each month (which is a measly $125, not enough to buy sh…!), well guess what he has only paid child support 3 times this year, always in arrears even after I wiped his slate clean!!!!!!   In the words of Ed Lover “Come on Son” you have got to be kidding me. Last year when I called him on it as I often do, what did he do, you guessed it, pointed the finger at me.   Called me a fat miserable bitch, I’m going to die because I have high blood pressure (which I don’t) I’m a hoe, my mommas a hoe and so on and so on and told me never to contact him again, just like he told his daughter.   Now at what point does this trifling nigga think he should take responsibility and say you know what I could be a better father, I could spend more time, I should fooking pay my child support, NOPE it’s always the other person’s fault. As you see below this is all he has paid to date and the last time he paid was in fooking June!   Oh did I mention his BITCHASS wife, she is worse than him.   Just so happens she has a child that he just loves to take care of.   Last year when I called him out he tells her=2 0to email my daughter to say he’s not sending her anything for Christmas, how low down is that, to have your wife email your daughter to tell here you won’t be sending her anything for Christmas,  and this bitch sent my child an email saying just that!!!   She needs her mutha fookin ass whooped!!!!   Well one thing is for sure they definitely belong together!!!”Tony Neal responded to his ex in Ozone Magazine here.

Doctor Steals Dying Man’s WHAT?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Filed Under: Well.. he doesn’t need it anymore!

STOCKTON, CA – The children of a former Manteca police lieutenant say a Stockton emergency room doctor allowed their father to die so the doctor could steal the man’s expensive Rolex watch, according to a lawsuit filed last week. Dr. Cleveland Enmon was indicted by a San Joaquin County grand jury for grand theft last month stemming from the June incident at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton. Enmon, 32, of Hermosa Beach is also facing a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the adult children of Jerry Kubena, Sr. Kubena, a retired Manteca police lieutenant, was rushed by ambulance to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton on June 1 with heart problems. According to a 15-page civil lawsuit, Kubena’s family alleges Enmon noticed Kubena’s expensive Presidential Rolex watch, then allowed Kubena to die from a heart attack so he could steal the watch.

The lawsuit states that two nurses at the hospital noticed the missing watch after Kubena died and saw a watch bulge in Enmon’s pocket. After hospital security was called to investigate, Enmon allegedly defied security’s orders, left the emergency room and threw the watch in a grassy area outside the hospital. A nurse who followed Enmon alerted security and led officers to the spot where Kubena’s watch was found. According to the court document, St. Joseph’s administration confronted Enmon with videotaped evidence of the theft and removed him from working at the hospital.

In the civil lawsuit, Kubena’s family is suing Enmon as well as St. Joseph’s and the hospital’s owners Catholic Healthcare West for wrongful death, conspiracy, negligent hiring and supervision. The suit alleges St. Joseph’s attempted to cover up Enmon’s crime after he was removed. The family’s attorney, Jeff Silvia, told News Ten, “The family is completely appalled. They expected the hospital would have hired a doctor concerned about the well-being of his patient and not about his personal gain. He aband oned his effort to resuscitate their father.” A San Joaquin County grand jury indicted Enmon on one count of grand theft August 25. Enmon is scheduled to be arraigned Monday. Calls to hospital administration and Enmon were not returned Sunday. [source]
