OH NO: Michael Jackson had a very low Credit Score

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Here’s a shocker — Michael Jackson had an abysmally low credit score.

TMZ reports that in 2007, Michael Jackson’s average credit score was 563.67 (Equifax 592, Transunion: 524, Experian: 575) which most experts consider very low. (According to creditreport.com, the average credit rating for people in California is 672.)

The reasons for MJ’s credit woes … We’re told he was dinged for several reasons, including:

— A derogatory public record or collection filed
— The amount owed on delinquent accounts
— Number of accounts with delinquency
— Too many inquiries in the last 12 months

Conservative’s History of Attacks on Democratic Presidents starts with Abuse of “Freedom of Speech”

0

The Industry Dot Biz: The rally against President Obama by angry conservatives seems to be growing and I have to ask myself, is this the same way Bush was treated but I was, perhaps, less sensitive because he was not a black man? Then I quickly realized that Bush’s worst criticisms came years after he was in the white house and after several MAJOR mishaps that did nothing for his PR per say. Many lives were lost, disasters took place and extremely bad decisions were made during his tenure and while people certainly expressed their dismay Obama, least we forget, inherited the task of having to spend most or his entire 4 year term cleaning up the mess the Bush Administration left behind. Is that an easy task. HELL NO so why is it that these people are not giving him a break?

The polls are reporting that   the economy is improving, the banking, the car industry and the real estate industry are reporting improvements which is significant considering where we were this past December, but those things seem to take a back seat to Obama’s latest drive to correct our horrendous health care system. The conservatives have some Americans believing that Obama’s plan will cover illegal immigrants and that it is designed to take benefits away from the elderly. I think MOST Americans of all colors would not agree that our new health care system should cover illegal immigrants, including me but the response to Obama’s plans have surpassed any expectation I ever had from angry conservatives who are most likely covered themselves. They have no concept of the many poor Americans of all colors who are American citizens who have died unnecessarily at the mercy of the current health insurance system. I actually know some people. A woman with breast cancer comes to mind who was at stage 2 when she was diagnosed but because she did not have insurance, the constant rejection by many organizations to help her sent her into a deep depression where she finally gave up, isolated herself in her apartment and died in a hospice at 48 years of age. It’s not enough for someone diagnosed with a major disease to get medical attention, it’s not often considered that they fall into a major depression too.

Those who are rallying against Obama’s plans and stand ing behind the Becks, Limbaughs and Palins have not lost a mother. sister or a friend to a ridiculous HMO plan or to a state hospital because their job at Wallmart or some other outlet reporting mass revenue each year,   didn’t offer insurance to employees. They are seeing the current insurance issue through tainted rose colored glasses. The conservative talk show hosts’ drive to compete and get ratings make the situation worse because their main concern it to concoct theories of their own including drawn up false concepts of what President Obama is trying to do resulting in mere sensationist ratings-driven TV and radio for the lack of a better word…”news.”   These misleading broadcasts are all simply an   effort to increase paychecks with a total disregard for the metally ill viewers who take what they say word for word. This entire situation is beyond toxic. It’s about talk radio and TV gone awry. Beck, Limbaugh O’Reilly and others are a mere glorified version of reality radio and reality TV but for news (sans actual journalists).   Whether or not they realize the power and influence they have over the group of angry Americans who can border on anything from staunch republican to hardcore nutcase remains to be seen but the meal that fox news is feeding viewers is dangerous nonetheless.

History has always shown that Democratic presidents are attacked from every angle from gate. The Kennedy’s, Carter and Clinton experienced it before Obama and know the story oh so well. As I am one of the last of the Baby Boomers the most vivid memory I have is the vicious attacks on Bill Clinton from day one of his term in office by conservatives and republicans alike. I’m sure the attacks on Obama certainly are in part race-based but because so many other democratic presidents have had the same fate, it’s not entirely race based.   Rush Limbaugh’s lead in ‘hoping Obama fails’ before Obama officially took office was most disturbing and evil and I think that statement was ENTIRELY race AND ratings based.

The verbal attacks are coming fast and furious and are targeted not only to Obama’s proposed policies but the attacks are often deliberately twisted interpretations and yellow journalism jabs per fox news for getting the biggest rise out of the white Americans who didn’t want Obama to be president in the first place.   Now Sarah Palin, unable to hand le the job of Governor, seems to have joined the fray in an attempt to attack her former competitor. She lost, if her goal is to run in 2012, she needs to prepare herself for that and stay out of the limelight. It is hard for me to believe that people actually believe in her. I honestly believe John McCain would have had a much better chance of winning if he had not chosen her as his running mate. Something he probably also realizes himself now.

Sarah Palin Asks Facebook Readers to Watch Glenn Beck?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Sarah Palin is a sore loser. At least her running mate John McCain has gracefully stepped out of the limelite. She can’t even hand le the responsibiliy of being Governer and now she is pissed because she is not the Vice President? I can tell you right now McCain would have had a major problem with her if they had won. Glenn Beck’s growing list of supporters is still going unnoticed by urban media as he and Fox News take Free Speech to a whole new undesirable level.

Do Independent Labels Want Everything For Nothing?

0

width=I get a lot of email from industry people who ask various questions. One that I got this week peaked my interest.

“Why are Independent Labels so Cheap!!”
This person is an independent promoter and he was complaining about independent labels who expect the world for nothing and how tired he was of making his pitch for business for the bullsh… money they offer.

First let me start off by saying not ALL independent labels are cheap however, it is a reasonable question and at one time, I myself asked the same question but here’s the part you may not want to hear. Have you ever noticed that when people ask this question they almost always compare it to “They wouldn’t treat white industry people that way?” Well that’s true. As a matter of fact I JUST had a situation that happened with me where I made a big mistake with a potential client that very closely relates to this subject. OH NO: Radio Slumps 22% in Q2; Digital Continues to Grow

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Local and national radio ad revenue sank 25% in the second quarter of 2009, to $3.4 billion, per the Radio Advertising Bureau. Local and national combined were also down 25% for the half.Local was down 25% and national was down 24% for the quarter; each was down 25% for the half. Off-air sank 13% for the quarter and the half. Network radio was down 10% and 11% for the quarter and the half, respectively.

Digital radio (reported separately from off-air beginning in 2009) was up 9% for the quarter and 10% for the half, showing an improvement in the market.

Total radio revenue was down 22% for the quarter and 23% for the half.

Despite the continued slump in overall revenue, the RAB says Q2 results show increasing signs of an improving economy. “We are most likely past the Q1 low point for radio revenues and are now on the rebound,” stated Jeff Haley, president and CEO of the RAB. Much of radio’s weakness in Q2 and for the first six months of 2009 is linked to marketers associated with the auto industry (formerly radio’s top ad category, now #3) and major retailers feeling the impact of shaky consumer confidence and spending.

The RAB says that some advertisers, previously unable to compete against category leaders, are taking advantage of a chance to increase share and position within the market. Such moves are visible across various reporting categories, including Restaurants, Communications, and Automotive, particularly Imports. Among local and national advertisers leading the charge are Subway, Dunkin Donuts, Boost Mobile, US Cellular, Metro PCS, Mitsubishi, Volvo and Honda Motor Corporations.

The 22% drop for the quarter followed a 24% slump in the first quarter. National and local ad spending combined was down 26%, while network radio was down 13%. [source]

The Industry Dot Biz: MARY J. BLIGE, JOE, MUSIQ SOULCHILD AND WHO’S WHO OF URBAN CONTEMPORARY MUSIC COME TOGETHER FOR Silky Soul Music”¦. An All- Star Tribute to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly

FIRST EVER TRIBUTE CD SET RELEASED YESTERDAY

The buzz continues to build for the CD, Silky Soul Music…An All- Star Tribute to Maze featuring Frankie Beverly released digitally TODAY and in-stores September 29.   The highly anticipated ten-song CD features brand new studio recordings of Maze’s biggest hits such as “Joy and Pain” and “Before I Let Go.”   The set boasts an impressive list of urban music artists such as the legendary Mary J. Blige, Musiq Soulchild, Ledisi, Kem, Mint Condition, Joe, Raheem DeVaughn, Kevon Edmonds, Avant and the Clark Sisters with J. Moss and Kierra Sheard.

Grammy nominee Rex Rideout (Vanessa Williams, Will Downing, Ledisi) and Anthony Beverly (Frankie’s son) produced 9 tracks on the album. Grammy winner Donald Lawrence produced the Clark Sisters’ “I Wanna Thank You” track. “For the most part, we let the vocalists, and their distinctive styles command how the songs would be freshened,” says Rideout. “All of the artists did great jobs interpreting Frankie and bringing a new twist to a great song book.

“Seeing my father’s reaction to the final album was priceless,” says Anthony, who also served as one of the executive producers on the project (along with Music services, LLC and his entertainment attorney wife, Heather Beverly). “To see the emotion on his face when he heard each and every song was one of the proudest moments of my life. He loves the album and is overwhelmed that so many people came together to make it happen. It is definitely a project that gives my father and Maze their just due.”

Around the country, there have been exclusive listening parties that have brought out everyday fans, music industry VIPS and celebrities such as the iconic Stevie Wonder who stopped by the Hollywood album release party. Radio stations across the country are ecstatic about the tribute CD project. Joe’s remake of Maze’s “Can’t Get Over You” is #32 on the Nielsen BDS Urban AC National Radio Airplay Chart and continues to fuel the fire this project has ignited.

No one is more pleased than Frankie Beverly himself. “The tribute album for me is a special blessing from my God,” he says. “Most people who have had a tribute album given to them were not here to see it, feel it or hear it.  Well, no matter what happens in the days, months or years to come, I have indeed been blessed to see, feel and hear this gift of gifts from a loving son and his lovely wife. There are no words to express my true gratitude for all the artists involved, all of who gave one hundred percent of themselves to this project.  I have no idea what qualifies me for such a honor but I do know one thing, I will treasure this moment for the rest of my life.”

Over the last four decades, Maze has become an R&B radio staple with a dozen albums and 30 R&B chart hits. They continue to perform to sold-out arenas in the U.S.A. and abroad.

RECORD LABEL EXEC: RADIO IS “PARAMOUNT” TO BREAKING ARTISTS, KEEPING SUPERSTARS RELEVANT

0

The Industry Dot Biz: RCA Records Senior Vice President of Pop Promotion Peter Gray became the latest record executive to single out radio airplay for its unparalleled role in helping promote the sale of music. Gray’s remarks come as the Recording Industry Association of America continues a legislative push that would punish radio by requiring stations to pay an additional licensing fee amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars for music aired free to listeners. Gray’s record label, RCA, is part of Japanese-based Sony Music Entertainment, an RIAA member company.

“[T]he primary function of a record label’s promotion department is to secure radio airplay for its artists,” Gray said in an interview published in OnMilwaukee.com. “We rely on our relationships with music programmers at all contemporary radio formats, nationwide — Top 40, Urban and Urban Adult, Hot AC and Mainstream Adult, Rhythm, Alternative, Active Rock, Rap, Dance, College radio, Smooth Jazz, etc. Our partnership with radio is paramount to breaking new acts, as well as keeping superstar artists in the eyes and ears of their fans and the music buying public.”

TRYING TO HAVE IT BOTH WAYS?

Record Label Executives

“[T]he primary function of a record label’s promotion department is to secure radio airplay for its artists.”
— RCA senior VP Peter Gray

“I have yet to see the big reaction you want to see to a hit until it goes on the radio.”
— RCA executive VP Richard Palmese

Radio is still the leading force of determining what songs and artists break through.”
Clive Davis, Sony Music’s chief create officer

Record Label Hired Guns

Radio is “a form of piracy, if you will, but not in the classic sense as we think of it.”
— musicFIRST spokesman

“If radio did not exist, many of these individuals would likely be listening to pre-recorded music in place of the non-existent radio…”
— RIAA-funded economist Stan Liebowitz

“If there was a platinum record awarded for hypocrisy, the record labels would surely be in contention.”
— NAB Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton

Detailing his daily duties, Gray explained, “The daily grind of promotion is really two-fold: First, you have to get the songs played on the radio. In some cases this is easy and in others a real chore. Second, you have to monitor your play constantly, which is a very competitive and strategic mathematical game.”

Gray went on to explain how radio airplay is monitored and aggregated into weekly charts published by Billboard, which he called “the report card.”

“I work closely with a staff of regional and national promotion executives to ensure that our songs reach the top of the charts, a space that command s a wide weekly audience,” he continued. “Most importantly, though, is a lot of time on the road listening to and visiting stations, a lot of time on the phones persuading programmers to play my songs.”

Notably, Gray is not the first record label executive to stress the important role radio airplay plays in generating music sales revenue for the record label and artist. Both Gray’s boss, RCA Music Group Executive Vice President of Promotion Richard Palmese and Clive Davis, the legendary music mogul described as Gray’s mentor in the OnMilwaukee.com interview, have also recognized the promotional power of free radio airplay.

“I have yet to see the big reaction you want to see to a hit until it goes on the radio,” Palmese told Radio & Records in June 2007. “I’m a big, big fan of radio.”

“Radio is still the leading force of determining what songs and artists break through,” Davis said in a June 2009 interview published in USA Today.

Commenting on Gray’s statement, NAB Executive Vice President Dennis Wharton said, “Mr. Gray’s unambiguous recognition of local radio airplay’s promotional power stand s in stark contrast to the cynical actions of RIAA, which continues a campaign to financially cripple the very radio stations Gray relies on to generate increased music sales. If there was a platinum record awarded for hypocrisy, the record labels would surely be in contention.”

Today’s news comes as RIAA — backed by the four largest record labels in the world — continues to urge Congress to pass legislation that would levy an additional fee or “performance tax” on local radio stations that air music free to listeners. While the legislation was passed by the House Judiciary Committee in a contentious 21-9 vote earlier this summer, there remain 246 House lawmakers and 23 Senators who are on record in opposition to the RIAA-led effort.

RIAA’s campaign includes the funding of a 2007 study conducted by Stan Liebowitz, an economics professor at the University of Texas at Dallas, which falsely claims that radio airplay actually hurts record sales. In 2008, the musicFIRST Coalition, a group funded by the RIAA, called local radio “a form of piracy.”

The overwhelming Congressional opposition to the RIAA-led campaign comes through the Local Radio Freedom Act, a bipartisan resolution expressly denouncing a performance tax. Supported by 246 House lawmakers and 23 U.S. Senators, the resolution reads:

“Congress should not impose any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge relating to the public performance of sound recordings on a local radio station for broadcasting sound recordings over-the-air, or on any business for such public performance of sound recordings,” reads The Local Radio Freedom Act.

On Glenn Beck: Why Tom Joyner , Steve Harvey, Cathy Hughes and Michael Baisden Won’t Touch it!

0

The Industry Dot Biz: When I listened to Steve Harvey’s show this past week for the first time in a while they were trying to resolve this stupid woman’s elementary love problem. Some sh… she really learned 20 years ago as a teen, she foolishly forces herself to still question in her 40’s. Is this the BEST that we can do in urban radio? Is our collective intellect that minute?   Why won’t someone just come out and finally tell this proverbial woman who has called into every black syndicated show on earth and who has written ESSENCE magazine in every issue… ‘He doesn’t WANT YOU! You are too desperate. Lose weight, get healthy, go back to school, get a better job, raise your kids, MOVE ON, make yourself marketable and let a man meet YOU on your way somewhere!’   Like my uncle, who was a pimp, used to say… “if somebody wants you bad enough, they will pay you for it.. not run from your ass.”

I have said a zillion times in this blog that urban radio needs to return to “community oriented programming” this example is the very reason. Glenn Beck’s fear-based rhetoric rants have created a whole new generation of otherwise undercover racists who have begun to rethink their idle positions and instead of sitting idly by on the sidelines with their biased and unreasonable thoughts,   have now been encouraged to move to the front of the line. This is not looking good. Beck has greatly helped in leading these people to think President Obama is evil and corrupt by spreading absolute sensationalism and yellow journalism (he does admit he’s not a journalist) to directly attack Obama’s character and proposed policies. Beck is not the only one that should be off the air, Fox News should be off the air! How are you going to hire someone who is not a journalist on a news network unless you INTEND to cause an uproar?

Beck is an angry white guy, probably with a baby dick who has a deep seated hatred for black men. He is also the kind of guy who would disown his daughter if she brought home a black man but would still claim he’s not racist because his mailman is black and he hasn’t called the police on him yet. Just like a person who is insane, Beck is the worst kind of racist because he thinks everybody else is and he isn’t (laugh)

All jokes aside how much can Tom Joyner or the self promotion king Steve Harvey say or do about this? Not a damn thing. This is where community oriented urban radio could play a HUGE part in dismantling the house that Glenn Beck is building. Major black corporations and syndication shows are not going to touch Beck for fear of Beck’s supporter’s wrath, but LOCAL urban morning shows could be abuzz right now on the issue, HUGE petitions could be getting passed around and Glenn Beck would soon be a thing of the past and Fox News would be under scrutiny if we had local community based urban radio’s support. Fox News’ name should be changed to Fox Tabloid.

Beck would never want to be viewed as the guy attacking a small local urban station, that would make him look like the big bad racist which is why Cathy Hughes, Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey are not going to rock the corporate boat by causing an uproar. Beck and his supporters would eat them alive. It’s as if they are all saying ‘Obama, you are on your own on this one bruh, I have my 20 mansions to pay the mortgage on. But could you create a stimulus package for us anyway? C’mon help a brother (sister) out’ (laugh). Glenn Beck would not have an OUNCE of power if he tried to attack 150 local urban radio stations each. The community in each market would eat HIS racist ass alive. I can’t say that I don’t understand , at least, Cathy Hughes’ position, I do… but Tom, Steve and Michael? I can only say if we had some young black energetic leaders in the 2009 version of community based urban radio things would be very different.
