Nate Quick’s Untimely Death Shows Listener’s Interest in DJs

0

The Industry Dot Biz: For many years, urban radio has tried desperately to claim the music as the star of the station… I think this came about via constipated consultants and the once greedy mom and pop owners who saw Radio DJs being treated like stars who they viewed as out of control. I don’t know which one I have more of a problem with, syndication or consultants. At least consultants are a dying breed (did I say that? Bad blogger).   Ultimately the REAL problem was the owners were jealous and they didn’t have the skills to duplicate the DJ’s but wanted a piece of the DJ pie nonetheless. They knew it was delicious (laugh). What better way to take the power of the DJ than to to use black on black slave tactics? Owners stopped letting DJs program their own shows and book their own concerts and they hand ed that responsibility to the PDs and the sales staff. Many didn’t stop there. They broke the DJ down even more by destroying his self esteem and making him feel expendable and worthless to the industry.   Ironically, some of that still happens today but I better not ever hear of it.

When Nate Quick died this past week Urban radio management and the trades barely responded (online).   Out of the many comments on the posts that we did for Nate I saw few, if any, from programmers and radio management and I know many programmers and radio management people read it because I have the report. What urban radio did do, and I don’t know who to give credit for this, is they talked about it on the air (Kudos my radio family). For a format that does not like “swan songs” urban radio really came through on this occasion as over 50,000 people read that one post about Nate’s passing. I thought I was blown away when Media Take Out did links to a couple of our stories. Nate’s story got the highest readership in the history of the blog. My brother was truly a star (laugh). When I write something about Cathy Hughes, we’d be lucky to get 200 readers no matter what the subject on her. Readers don’t have a connection with her and consumers really don’t care about the politics of radio, the Performance Tax issue or the fact that urban radio is struggling cause that’s all out of their reach, thanks to syndication… they DO however care about Radio DJs and those they can touch see and feel from our industry. I have to admit, I was surprised that radio talked about Nate on the air but I know a lot of those numbers we got HAD to come from urban radio and I thank you guys for it. Needless to say the bottom line is it proves DJs are indeed STILL stars or at least we have the ability to be. You think my campaign to get young Radio DJs on the air was bad before? What till you see me after this post.

RIP Nate Quick (a tribute)(pics).

The Industry Dot Biz: (KRNB PD and Radio Legend Nate Quick passed around 10pm last night and was surrounded by friends and family) I knew the time was near for Nate’s family to make the decision and I am not a person who sugar coats a situation so I didn’t do an update yesterday and got many emails asking why. Now you know. I talked to Nate several times in recent months and he never even hinted that anything was wrong. Even when it became obvious that something was wrong with the people that he worked with, he continued to do his airshift and his job because it was what he truly loved doing no matter what. Nate was someone who managed to roll with life’s variable punches with ease and he’s been through a lot. Nate talked about two things in almost every conversation we ever had, his late mother and his younger brother. He truly cherished those two people.

Nate was one of those people who believed in chronicling his industry tenure and I realize now how important these pictures are…   to show one’s children, great grand children etc… and even now to bring a smile to the many industry faces who feel like they have lost a friend. Nate would say to me “Man, I can’t believe you are running those old ass pictures!”  (acting like he was modest but at the same time, he would be glad I did) Nate was one of the few people who often broke the industry rule and he would actually take your call if you were not working (laugh) I am very sad and happy at the same time yet I feel Nate is at peace. It is incredibly evident to me now more than ever that only the good die young. Nate will be greatly missed but I know he is already running around and looking for a new PD gig and a new rap group to promote in the most major market of them all.. Heaven. Rest in Peace Nate..
Your friend,

Update on Nate Quick

0

The Industry Dot Biz: width=Easy posted this in the comments on the Nate Quick story we posted yesterday. I don’t know Easy and I’m not in Dallas but I sincerely hope and pray that the theme of his statement below is the whole story. I’m hearing a bit more from other sources close to the situation but of respect for my friend Nate, I will not report specific details. All I can say is please continue to pray for him. Kev

Hello everyone. I am formerly known as DJ Eazy Ice from Power 98 in Charlotte, a former   co-worker and roommate of Nate. We’ve worked together in Charlotte and here in Dallas. I’ve received a lot of calls & text messages and what has bothered me are some of the “speculations” that I have heard since Sunday morning. I felt the need to submit a post since I have been at the hospital off and on since Saturday night. Nate has complications with his liver which has caused other organs to malfunction and shut down. They are keeping him heavily sedated and he’s on a ventilator. Forgive me for not knowing a lot of the “medical terms”. Saturday, he was rushed to the hospital after collapsing at his home. He had stopped breathing and had to be resuscitated. They had to put a tube down his throat for his breathing. I got to the hospital and he was very pale and lost a lot his color, and today, he looked like he had much of his tan color back. I spoke to one of the nurses, and I was told that the levels of his vitals were all out of line when he was admitted and within a day, everything had sort of leveled out to a stable state. At times he can respond to voices and tries to to move his mouth and open his eyes. If you hold his hand and talk to him, he’ll try to squeeze your hand to respond to you.

He recognizes familiar voices and will try to open his eyes. No Limit Larry from WPEG flew in to visit Nate today and was very responsive to Larry. He also responded to voices of coworkers that visited from K-104 and KRNB. I haven’t set up a Twitter account but I will attempt to set up one tonight to submit updates. A lot of people have heard different things and have said to me……”If I hear something, I will call you to verify it”!!! I will be going back to the hospital in the   morning (Tuesday) and I will update you all sometime tomorrow. If you have any questions, email me at [email protected]. I’m a FIRM believer in the power of prayer and I ask that you ask in your prayer for God’s covering over Nate. He’s touched SO MANY lives and he’s in prayers of many. Pray and BELIEVE that God heals!!!!! God Bless you All!

WJMN Party Promotion becomes Brawl

The Industry Dot Biz: The question is how can radio get a better handle on these situations?

Police said a fight early last Saturday morning in the parking lot of the Executive Court, 1199 South Mammoth Road, occurred near the end of a fashion show and dance event sponsored by Second Wind Entertainment in conjunction with a Massachusetts hip hop music and R&B radio station, WJMN-FM. A spokesman at the Executive Court said Second Wind has sponsored events at the facility in the past without incident.

There was no response to an e-mail sent to the promoter listed on the Website, Arnold Soko, but the facility spokesman said Soko had apologized to them in writing. Police reported finding between 150 and 200 people in the parking lot, many of them involved in verbal and physical altercations. The officers eventually were able to quiet the disturbance and move some of the people out of the parking lot. One person was taken to the hospital for a minor facial injury.

Police said the disturbance started again a short time later and officers arrested six people on various charges, including disorderly conduct and resisting arrest or detention.

Radio One’s 100.3 the BEAT and 107.9 WRNB invites listeners to sign Michael Vick “Welcome to Philadelphia” Card

The Industry Dot Biz: width=Radio One’s 100.3 the BEAT and 107.9 WRNB invites listeners to sign   Michael Vick “Welcome to Philadelphia” Card

Philadelphia, PA. –  On Wednesday, August 19, 2009 100.3 the BEAT and 107.9 WRNB will broadcast live from the Sound of Philadelphia Souvenir Shop at 309a South Broad Street in Philadelphia from 2pm-6pm inviting listeners to sign a card welcoming Michael Vick to the Philadelphia.

Amidst the controversial signing of Michael Vick to the Philadelphia Eagles, Radio One Philadelphia aims to show support for Vick’s “second chance” at life and his NFL career.   The contentious signing has been divisive to say the least, but Radio One Philadelphia’s Operations Manager, Elroy Smith, believes that Michael Vick deserves a second chance.   “Michael Vick has a significant opportunity to not only write an empowering redemption story, but to also make a positive impact within the Philadelphia Community,” Smith states.   “There is a resounding majority of ex-offenders in Philadelphia looking for a genuine second chance at life.   Vick can be that role model that illustrates a successful and positive life after incarceration while also speaking out against dog fighting rings which is prevalent here in Philadelphia.”

As a demonstration of this support, 100.3 the BEAT’s Poochman and 107.9’s Lady B will broadcast live from the Sound of Philadelphia Souvenir Shop from 2pm-6pm encouraging all Michael Vick supporters and fans to sign a “Welcome to Philadelphia Card.”

“Our message is not to endorse the horrific wrong that has been done, but to support a man that seems genuine in his pursuit to right those very wrongs,” says Smith.   “He has satisfied his debt to society, been reinstated to the NFL, and Radio One welcomes Michael Vick to Philadelphia.”

Pray for KRNB PD Nate Quick

The Industry Dot Biz: Nate Quick, one of the nicest guys in the industry is on life support as you read this. I am devastated and I just found out that he has a severe liver ailment. Nate Quick and I started out in radio together at WIGO in Atlanta where he worked 7 to Mid and I did the overnight shift. I can honestly say he was a true friend and we have been good friends since 1985… Doctors and those close to the situation say the outlook is very dismal and his father and family members are on their way from Carolina to make the final decision.   Nate was just getting on my case because I came through Dallas a few months back and didn’t get a chance to stop through to see him. I regret that I did not make that trip now. I will keep you posted of further details.
