The Industry Dot Biz: I have not heard Micheal Baisden’s name or show mentioned in months until now. His show was just dropped by KDAY. I guess that’s not news since KDAY has dropped just about all of its syndicated shows but why have we not been hearing Baisden’s name lately? Out of all the syndicated shows, I realized Baisden is the only one that has no entertainment history. I know he wrote books so it would appear he would have to work harder than Harvey, Joyner and Smiley to keep his name in the loop. Perhaps a new book is in order? One thing I can say about Steve Harvey, he knows how to stretch that 15 minutes and he knows the value of brand ing and does the best job out of them all. In addition, there was a rumor that Tom Joyner sent a letter to stevie wonder pissed about not being picked over steve harvey for the morning slot. That rumor is not true. Also, I sincerely doubt that Stevie will be in the market for anymore syndicated shows. I’m sure he’s being bombarded nonetheless. The schedule of the station has not really changed much except Guy Black is gone and some of the staff has been reassigned. Surprisingly, the comments that have come in on kjlh have been more about former morning host Cliff Winston and /or welcoming steve harvey back.

C-Murder’s Sister Flips at Trial, Judge orders arrest of anyone who even gasped at the verdict. (vid)
The Industry Dot Biz: Corey C-Murder Miller faces life in prison for second degree murder after killing Steve Thomas in a Louisiana nightclub in 2002. The victim’s father George Thomas said: “I’m not rejoicing. I feel bad for [Miller’s] family. “But at least they can see him. What have we got but a gravesite and a photograph?” Miller was first charged in 2003, when he decided to change his name from C-Murder to C-Miller because he felt people misunderstood his name. He told USA Today in 2005 that C-Murder stood for “See Murder”, after the killings he had witnessed growing up in a rough New Orleans neighbourhood.
The rapper was eventually found guilty of second-degree murder in 2003 and spent three years in jail, before winning a retrial. It took two jury votes in the latest trial to convict him, after one woman appeared to have changed her vote just to end deliberations. The judge ordered police to fill the courtroom for the final verdict, arresting anyone who so much as “gasped” at the decision. The victim’s family left in tears. Miller was convicted of a separate count of attempted murder from 2001.
She says he’s innocent and that he was charged totally based on his name (???) One might ask, why did he pick that name? Then she calls for Barack as if he is supposed to help get Corey out of the situation? Corey’s brother Master P appears to have skipped the trial.
This is the video (below) of another shooting C Murder was involved in where he pleaded no contest. Nobody died from this incident but it was caught on tape.
What is the Definition of a “Mom and Pop” Quick Breakdown
Yesterday, I was talking to a good friend who mentioned to me that a company she worked for was “just a mom and pop organization.”
We all know the basics of what a “Mom and Pop is and many of us resort to describe it a poorly run, often black, operation but did you know a large corporation can also be a “Mom and Pop” too? Moreover it does not always have to be black owners.
To celebrate The Industry Dot Biz ‘ 14 year anniversary for the next month and having that much experience as a business owner, I’ve seen it all and I’m going to tell you what a Mom and Pop REALLY is.. and what creates them..

1. A Lack of Capital at Start up
In the beginning of any business the greatest need is ALWAYS capital. Many of us have never had the luxury, as I was telling my industry friend yesterday, of coming home as kids and listening to our fathers talk about his day at the job doing business like white kids often do/did. There were no father/son days for many of us where our fathers took us to work because for the most part…. there were no fathers (laugh)…. I was no different as were most of the kids I grew up. The black father was simply non existent. To that (read the rest on “Mom and Pops” in the Forum)

Gym Massacre Mastermind Left Some Words of Advice for Black Men?
The Industry Dot Biz: Wow… here’s the quote, read the whole story here….
He continued: In light of this I got ideas outside of Obama’s plans for the economy and such. Here it is: Every black man should get a young white girl hoe to hone up on. Kinda a reverse indentured servitude thing. Long ago, many a older white male land owner had a young Negro wench girl for his desires. Bout’ time tables are turned on that sh…. Besides, dem young white hoez dig da bruthrs! LOL. More so than they dig the white dudes! Every daddy know when he sends his little girl to college, she be bangin a bruthr real good. I saw it. “Not my little girl”, daddy says! (Yeah right!!) Black dudes have thier choice of best white hoez. You do the math, there are enough young white so all the brothers can each have one for 3 or 6 months or so.

OH NO: Russ Parr Event – 12 Arrests for Fights
The Industry Dot Biz: LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A police spokesman says about a dozen people have been arrested at a back-to-school concert in Louisville.
Louisville Metro Police spokesman Dwight Mitchell said there were no serious injuries. A spokesman for Louisville Metro Council President David Tand y says fights broke out Thursday as about 4,000 people were leaving the Louisville International Convention Center. Spokesman Tony Hyatt said the concert, which Tand y helped sponsor, was part of the Russ Parr radio show bus tour. Hyatt said there was shoving as concertgoers were leaving. He said it turned into fighting and police moved in. Program director Tim Gerard for WGZB, which carries Parr’s show locally, said the Thursday morning event featured national acts and school supplies, including flash drives, were hand ed out. He said it was a shame that a few people would ruin the event for so many who had a good time. A similar back-to-school event was held last summer with Parr and people were taken to area hospitals for heat exhaustion and other ailments.
WHRK’s Devin Steel: Stepping back to move forward
The Industry Dot Biz:
The Tri State Defender wrote a great piece on PD Devin Steel a couple of days ago… (pictured: Devin and his wife Keysia)
The Rumba Room on Main St. Downtown lit up with fun farewells for Devin Steel last Thursday night (July 30.) Known as the “President of Afternoon Radio,” Steel is an on-air radio personality and program director for WHRK K97 ““ consistently the #1 area station in Hip-Hop and R&B station. Steel ““ a fixture all over town at the hottest parties ““ announced on the social networking site Facebook that he is stepping back from his front-and -center position on the nightclub scene. On his web page, Steel wrote a heartfelt letter to friends and fans. He noted his passion for music and the city of Memphis, and the importance of concentrating on his family ““ his wife, Keysia, and their daughters.
“This is my 20th year doing clubs, events, parties and public functions,” said Steel. “I made a promise to my myself, my wife, and my children that if I wasn’t where I wanted to be at 35, I would give it all up. Fortunately for me, I can proudly say that I am there.” Here’s the deal: “For right now, I am just backing away unless it is a special event,” said Steel. “People keep asking me am I retiring. The answer is “˜no.’ I am taking a step back to catch my breath and to open the door for some other opportunities.” A native Memphian, Steel has been program director at HOT 107, as well as K97.
“I am at the radio station everyday until 8 p.m. and that is really demand ing. One of the main reasons I am backing back from the consistent club stuff is to spend more time with my family,” he said. “Me and my wife enjoy traveling, but it is hard to go to, let’s say Miami, when you have to be back at the night club Saturday.”
His success notwithstand ing, Steele said his passion for music and radio still drives him to want to improve his skills. “As a radio host, people may not realize there are so many sides to me. So there comes a time when you have to step back to allow other doors to open up,” he said. “One of the things I want to do is go back to school to take some more technology courses. It is very important to continue my education because I do a lot of different things. Even when I do have free time at home I don’t have a lot of energy due to the amount of work.”
“I am not going anywhere. Nobody will miss me,” he said. “Interestingly enough, the statistics say that one percent of the people that listen to radio go to the nightclub”¦ I am still going to be on the radio everyday. I am still going to mix everyday at 5 o’clock.” The ride home at 5 o’clock with Steel includes the famous, yet ridiculously excellent mix of the latest chart topping hits in urban music. Loyal local listeners heading home call in with shout-outs and updates. Many of them are hilarious. “You can’t replace good, local radio. Every day, people call in to radio with great stories. That’s what its all about,” Steele said. “I have been on the radio for 12 years now, yet when people meet me face to face they still say, “˜I didn’t know you were a white guy.’ That’s a great thing about radio; you never really see who is entertaining you. That alone makes it even better because then it’s all based on content, which is a very special thing.” Steel said his favorite thing about his job is being around people that have a common passion for music and the way that technology is changing.
“It is a dream for me. I grew up listening to Stan Bell, Bobby O’Jay, and Jackson Brown. For me to work with these people and to be able to have relationships with them is surely an honor I’ll never forget.”

Is “Soul Music” Making a Comeback? K’Jon and Maxwell Lead the Trend
The Industry Dot Biz: I agree, the music industry is in dire need of some SOUL and while this reporter gives credit to both K’Jon and Maxwell, he failed to mention artists like Chrisette Michelle and the incredible anticipation of the Whitney Houston project.
Both K’Jon and Maxwell represent a strain of R&B that has remained blissfully ignorant of the rise and domination of hip-hop. In radio formatting terms, it’s urban adult contemporary, a name that does this often vibrant and underappreciated subgenre no favors. (It has a home on radio stations in most major cities; in New York it can be heard on 107.5, WBLS-FM.) For much of the last decade the format has been driven by neo-soul, though that movement has often felt like a conceptual offshoot of bohemian-minded rap. Adult soul, as practiced by Maxwell, K’Jon and others, borrows from classic soul in song structure and is preoccupied with more mature themes relevant to an older audience.
Twenty years ago some of these records might have been called “quiet storm,” and nowadays there’s overlap between smooth jazz, gospel and adult-oriented R&B. Kem, who like K’Jon is from Detroit, has released a pair of albums, “Kemistry” and “Album II” (Motown), that have helped shape the genre’s sound. Read the whole story here
