Q102″˜s “Mission Jonas” Gives Jonas Brother Fans the Thrill of a Lifetime: Listeners Won a Super Secret Jonas Brother’s Meet and Greet

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Q 102 gave a group of Jonas Brothers fans the thrill of a lifetime last week courtesy of Q102 and “Mission Jonas.” Q102 had the exclusive opportunity to take sixteen special listeners to welcome the Jonas brothers to Philadelphia Thursday July 23, 2009. Q102 “Mission Jonas” winners were whisked away by limo to a super secret meet and greet. The excitement was intensified because the fans were kept in the dark (the vehicle’s curtains were pulled shut) as to exactly where they were going. Once they arrived at a private plane terminal at Philadelphia International Airport ““ the winners were taken to a conference room and as they watched out the window the Jonas Brother’s private jet pulled to within 50 feet of the excited group. Kevin, Joe and Nick stepped off the plane and into the frenzy of true Q102 Jonas Brothers fans signing autographs and taking photos with the lucky listeners before heading off to their sold out concert at the Wachovia Center. For a gallery of pictures and video of Q102’s “Mission Jonas” – go to www.q102.com.

HAS RADIO ONE HEARD ME? Company FINALLY Looks To The Internet To Boost Revenues  |  Black Web 2.0

0

The Industry Dot Biz:

Radio One Inc., the largest radio broadcasting company targeting African-American and urban listeners, is busy building audience through another platform “” the Internet.

The company has quietly begun relaunching websites at its 53 radio stations. It recently relaunched all of its sites in the Washington D.C. market, including KYSDC.com, MyMajicDC.com, praisedc.com, myspiritdc.com and woldcnews.com. Relaunches in other Radio One markets are to follow.

It’s all a part of Radio One’s desire to develop additional revenue streams. Local radio stations of every type have been hit hard by the recession. Sales from automotive advertising “” a staple of radio ad sales “” is near historic lows in some markets, and other advertisers have shifted advertising away from radio and onto the Web. By relaunching its web sites, Radio One expects to be in better position to generate more revenue from Internet sales.

The strategy makes sense. The company has stations in key urban areas such as Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Charlotte, Cleveland , Dallas, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C.   With the network of stations Radio One will be able to offer major advertisers large, national campaigns featuring both the Web and the radio stations. That could give the company an advantage over some sites that lack the promotional power of a radio partner.

In addition to the 53 stations, Radio One owns Giant Magazine a financial stake in   TV One, and a majority stake in Reach Media, Inc., home of the Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) and

WHAT? Sarah Palin “testing the waters” for a radio deal

0

The Industry Dot Biz: What’s to “test”? She’ll draw the entire conservative base and a goodly chunk of the left as they tune in to channel the hate. Pay her whatever she wants and sign the deal.

Alaska’s now former Governor is coy about her future political plans, but radio is at least one option she’s leaving on the table. While not exactly shopping the GOP’s 2008 vice presidential cand idate, sources say Palin representatives have been quietly testing the waters to see how much interest radio syndicators have for her.

Sources say Palin hasn’t committed to radio either, but rather it could be a possible next step for her.

I’m assuming this would mean short scripted commentaries, a la what Fred Thompson used to do when he subbed for Paul Harvey. A live show, especially if she took calls, would be “¦ mind-boggling, and riveting. I’d honestly pay to listen. Plus, think how good she’d be in interviews after a few months of trial by fire fielding calls from deranged Palin-haters. “Line one, we have Andrew from Provincetown. Andrew, I understand you want to know who really carried my son Trig to term.”

The one downside of a live show: Lots of “whining” about the media. Lots.

Clear Channel Radio Has Agreed to Donate Stations to Help Minority Ownership

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Clear Channel Radio will donate a number of AM station to the council through the MMTC-Clear Channel Ownership Diversity Initiative. Initially, Clear Channel Radio plans to donate AM radio stations KYHN in Fort Smith, Ark.; WTFX in Winchester, Va.; KMFX in Rochester, Minn.; and WHJA in Laurel, Miss. The council will work with the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Education Foundation’s Broadcast Leadership Training Program to use these radio stations for training purposes as well as incubate a new generation of minority and women broadcast owners, says David Honig, president and executive director of the council.

For years, Honig and the council have been pressing their case before the Federal Communications Commission for regulators to award more station licenses to minority and women investors.   “Clear Channel Radio’s generosity and support creates an enormous opportunity not only for our own training programs, but for minority and women broadcasters who would not otherwise have the means to operate their own stations,” Honig says. “We look forward to working with Clear Channel through this ongoing program to promote diversity in radio broadcasting.”

Earlier this year, Clear Channel Radio donated a radio transmitter to the council. “We applaud the MMTC for creating a program that helps minority broadcasters develop the skills and experience necessary to become successful broadcasters,” Clear Channel Radio President and CEO John Hogan says. “We’re pleased these resources can help develop the next generation of broadcasters.” The Minority Media and Telecommunications Council is a nonpartisan and nonprofit organization that works to promote equality and civil rights in the mass media and telecommunications industries.
