Joyner Thanks Listeners for their support to get show back on in Chicago… but show is actually BROKERED?

The Industry Dot Biz: Well I was going to offer some discretion till I discovered the Sun Times put it on full blast. Article below…Talk about BUSTED… that video is null and void now (laugh)

Tom Joyner said Monday he is happy to be back for Chicago listeners, even though he bought the air time to do it.

The Tom Joyner Morning Show (TJMS) , known as “The Party with The Purpose,” will start airing Wednesday from 5 to 9 a.m. weekdays on SOUL 106.3FM, WSRB/ WYRB radio Joyner’s weekend program, “Right Back at Cha,” will air 9 to 11 a.m. Saturdays. “We knew we had to be back on the air, especially with the outcry of support from listeners and advertisers. So we said, ‘OK, rather than cut a deal with Crawford where we don’t have control, let’s just cough up the money, buy the morning drive and do it ourselves,'” Joyner said, declining to say how much it cost. Joyner, who was abruptly replaced March 24 by entertainer Steve Harvey on WVAZ-FM/V103’s morning show, said in a phone interview that Chicago is the only market in which he has bought air time because it’s his largest market and he “had to capitalize on the outcry” from listeners and advertisers who wanted him back.

“Chicago is the mother ship,” he said. “This is how Univision launched on TV, by buying time on independent stations,” he said, noting that if the strategy works in Chicago, he might expand it elsewhere. “We stepped out on faith that all the people who blogged, Tweeted, posted Facebook messages … saying they wanted to protest, to march, to do this and that … and the outcry of support from listeners and advertisers who said, ‘We want you back.'” Joyner will return to Chicago Monday to broadcast live from Kennedy-King College, host a news conference, and start an internship program in which Kennedy-King College communications students will work on the Joyner show.

“The students will be our street team, our roving reporters of news and events. We’ll let them learn what we mean when we say we ‘super serve’ the African-American community,” Joyner said. Joyner said his show will reflect “the sound of Chicago — the music, the people, the flavor. This will be the voice of black radio, Chicago’s Black radio!” Joyner said he was fired the day he returned from a week’s vacation and after he had completed that morning’s show. “At lunchtime we get a call,” he said. “It’s a cold business.”

Though Soul 106.3 reaches primarily the South Side and counts 475,000 weekday listeners, Joyner said he can still be competitive, partly because his Web-site listenership has tripled since his show was dropped in Chicago. “People in Chicago who want to hear our show have found it online,” he said. Reach Media, the Dallas-based parent company of the Morning Show, reached an agreement with Crawford Broadcasting, owner of SOUL 106.3FM, that allows “a more customized morning program that will be specific to Joyner’s ‘radio hometown,’ ” according to Joyner’s Web posting. “The irony was that Arbitron PPM ratings, released just days later, showed Joyner ranked No. 4 mornings in the key demographic of 25-54 year-olds with a 4.6 share for the entire market, and as the top urban morning show,” the Web posting stated. “It’s good to back. Thank you Lord,” Joyner said. “For all the outcry of support, please don’t stop now. You said you wanted this, don’t fail me now.”

He will be heard Monday through Friday from 6am-10am. Å“Doing an all music morning show with mixer Bent Roc garnered some of the highest ratings that weâ„¢ve seen in the last year for our morning show on the Beat. We are presently #1 with woman 18-34 without doing a traditional morning show. Charlamagne will be brought on board to accent the current success of the Å“Morning Beat. His command ing personality along with his internet savvy and his desire to be local will only propel this show to a higher plane. WOW: Clear Channel’s New Initiative is Actually a Great Concept, My Thoughts

0

The Industry Dot Biz: I was reading over Clear Channel’s Premium Choice concept over the last couple of days before I gave my opinion… For the most part, I’m impressed. I really like the local initiaitves to host more PSAs, community involvement and rewarding local, lesser known Radio DJs reward initiatives for bringing results. As you know, I am a local DJistorian (OK, I made up that word) and I’m pretty much against syndication (until I get offered my own show at which point I will be all for it). Even more impressive is the company’s commitment to local artists and playing their music and having local boards in every market. Moreover their commitment and understand ing of the importance of online promotion and audience are impressive. Did they finally get some youth on the boards over there?

The push on Ryan Seacrest and Steve Harvey could have been left out of the presentation, as if they need any more of a push but overall, I approve…. Will Radio One follow?

The Industry Dot Biz: Arbitron and Bonneville International Sign Multi-Year, Multi-Market Agreement for PPM software for radio programmers

Arbitron Inc. (NYSE: ARB) announced today that it has signed a multi-year, multi-market agreement with Bonneville International for a new software service for Portable People Meter ratings: PDA Web. PDA Web is an online version of PD Advantage, a programming tool that tracks the top line view of stationsâ„¢ performances with key audience metrics. Originally built for the diary service, this enhanced application now analyzes PPM radio ratings data. It allows radio station programmers to determine the station preferences of PPM respondents, when listeners are tuning in and tuning out, and to what stations they are going when they do tune out.

Å“PD Advantage is a Program Directorâ„¢s Swiss Army Knife, designed to answer very specific questions about a stationâ„¢s audience, said Pierre Bouvard, EVP, Sales, Arbitron Inc. Å“You canâ„¢t manage what you canâ„¢t measure, and PDA Web gives PDs in PPM markets granular information about how their stationâ„¢s metrics are trending.

Å“The combination of PPM Estimates and PD Advantage Web will provide Bonneville with audience insights that help us make better programming decisions faster, said Greg Solk, Vice President, Programming, Bonneville International. Å“With each new PPM market coming online, we are able to use what weâ„¢ve learned in LA, Chicago and DC and bring those programming enhancements online right away. Having the tools right out of the box for upcoming PPM markets will be invaluable.

CAN’T STOP LAUGHING: Ex DJ Sues Station Claims he was harassed, insulted, assaulted, battered, demeaned, enslaved and violated. So what’s the problem?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: This Radio DJ is a fooking pu..y. We have been treated like this in urban radio since day one. You mean this is not part of the job description??? (laugh)

TRAVERSE CITY — A former disc Radio DJey who contends he was harassed, abused and underpaid by a local radio station owner filed a lawsuit. Daniel S. Harrell, also known as Dan Stevens, worked as a disc Radio DJey, production manager and sales person for WLDR-FM 101.9 “Sunny Country” from October 2007 until December, according to his suit. The suit names station owner Roy Henderson and several radio companies that “share authority” over the station, said Harrell’s attorney, Jeff Radio DJs The suit alleges Henderson “on a regular and systematic basis, and without provocation, harassed, insulted, assaulted, battered, demeaned, enslaved and violated” Harrell throughout his course of employment. Threats and assaults made on Harrell by Henderson “created in him a well-founded and continuing fear of imminent peril,” according to the suit. Radio DJs, of the Traverse City firm Olson, Bzdok & Howard, wouldn’t elaborate on the nature of the abuse.

“There was some contact,” Radio DJs said. Harrell also contends Henderson broke the law by firing him when he asked for medical leave in December. A breach of contract count in the suit alleges Henderson paid Harrell substantially less than the two agreed upon and forced Harrell to work up to 80 hours a week without overtime. Harrell seeks at least $25,000 in damages.

Henderson deferred comment to his attorney, Will Davison, of the Traverse City firm Running, Wise & Ford. Davison said he’s just beginning to review the suit and isn’t ready to give detailed comment, though he called the suit’s credibility into question “There are some factual allegations in there that are basically non-existent … they just didn’t happen,” Davison said.

OH NO: Former Clear Channel Exec Gets Funding for huge ONLINE Radio Station Venture, Effort to pull listeners away from commercial radio!!!

The Industry Dot Biz: Filed Under: Radio Backstabists!

Goom Radio secures $16 million. Former Clear Channel and Google execs seek to, Ëœreinvent radio for the Internet generationâ„¢

In the midst of record labels cracking down on Online music piracy, (like last weekâ„¢s announcement of Seeqpod filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy while facing lawsuits with Warner and EMI), a new company is once again trying to change the way users consume music on the Web. Goom Radio, an online radio company based out of New York, has secured $16 million Series A funding from Wellington Partners Venture Capital, Elaia Partners and Partech International.

The company seeks to, Ëœreinvent radio for the Internet generation,â„¢ by providing its users a free platform in which they can create their own radio stations, similar to Online radio pioneers Last.fm and Pand ora. The company will be ad supported. Goom Radio has been up and running in France since the Fall of 2008. Here in the US, it launched in March of 2009. Currently, users who want to give it a try can sign up for a private beta and wait until they have something to play with. As for here in the States, Goom Radio will be led by Rob Williams, former president and market manager for Clear Channel New York, and Joe Anastasi, who comes from Google Audio. The company has also hired a team of DJâ„¢s and reporters to produce original content for Goom Radio. It is currently operating out of the Clear Channel Z100 studios in Jersey City.

And with this large $16 million Series A round, Goom Radio plans on, actually launch its offering, hiring a dedicated sales team and building out infrastructure.

OH NO: Singer/DJ Al B Sure’s Son Exposes Al with Open Letter

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Al B Sure’s son Quincy exposes Al for not being there for him as a father in an open letter to Global Grind. See letter below…

————————-

 Letter To My Father

I’ve been inspired throughout my life by special circumstances and unique experiences.  Foremost, I grew up with a family that injected me with unconditional love and enduring confidence.  This is my foundation, the family holidays and celebrations with my maternal lineage, supportive smiles in audiences at school programs, guiding hand s to complete homework and special projects in the wee hours of the morning.

However, I grew up without my father, an irreplaceable force and influence that was absent in my life. I watched other kids enjoy the embrace of theirs, and I searched for a way to reconcile the meaning of my circumstance.

Despite my pain, I’ve imagined a life as a good son with my father. Baseball,   Playing in School Band, Church, All of the things that  he would expect  his son to do, I’ve done.  I’ve stood in front of audiences to receive awards. I heard their applause and praise.  But, the accolades have been absent the sound of  his clapping hand s and encouraging words,  his voice that I could distinguish in my sleep. Where has he been?

Now, I reflect on the journey, the pain, the challenges, and the triumphs through this song.  I’m reconciled as a man, no longer a boy, in verse.  Now, I know that I’m not alone.

Albert Brown, also known as “Al B Sure! is my biological father, but Sean Combs, also known as “Diddy has been a father figure in my life for as long as I can remember. Sean Combs is the person whom I look up to and appreciate as a father. He is the one who help mold me into the person I am today and will always try to live up to his expectations. He has always been supportive of me and I will forever love and respect him. As far as my biological father goes, the “spitting image” is all I have taken from him. Throughout my life, I’ve always wondered about him; Where he was? What was he doing? And most importantly, Was he even thinking about me? The absence of my father has given me a better understand ing of what type of man I am going to be. I am grateful for my mom’s love, support, guidance, and for her strength.

To those who share my plight, know that you have a great future, a DESTINY.  Take the lemons that you are handed and make lemonade.  Your journey is in “A Letter To My Father.

WHAT? New In-depth documentary exposes the vicious side of the music business/50 Cent/Lloyd Banks and Others

0

The Industry Dot Biz: MVD Visual and Focus Media Entertainment are pleased to announce the home viewing release of Kill The Record Labels for worldwide distribution on DVD.

This documentary film directed by Charles Rand & T.Thomas features some of the hottest artists in hip hop music music expressing their views regarding the state of the industry. For decades, hip hop music was under the control of the record companies and corporations, but eventually artists adapted the labelsâ„¢ formula and began strategically promoting and marketing their own music. This evolution has created a major conflict within the industry.

“Hip Hop music has become the voice of the urban community, says Rand . Å“Artists like 50 Cent and Bun B make music about real life situations that happen in their neighborhoods. Generally, artists don’t make music about what goes on inside the music business. I made this film to give DJs, artist, and producers a voice. A great documentary is informative and entertaining. I spent alot of time and energy to make sure the audience walks away from this film with a better understand ing of issues that affect hip hop music culture and music.” This film includes commentary and insight from 50 Cent, Lloyd Banks, Chamillionaire, Bun B, Maino, DJ Drama, Young Buck, Juelz Santana, Green Lantern, Lil Scrappy, Jim Jones, Red Cafe, Mike Jones, DJ Vlad, Kid Capri, and more.

The record companies, in conjunction with the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), have declared war on these artists. Offices have been raided, mom & pop shops have been closed, and many people have been arrested.

Å“This riveting film shines a bright light on the dark side of Hip Hop.

Why Has WRKS Not Taken Tom Joyner yet…? read this

0

The Industry Dot Biz: We’ve learned that Reach Media or TJMS is so eager to get back into the NY market, WRKS, it would seem, would almost HAVE to accept the OUTRAGEOUS offer especially in this industry climate, but grab the nearest seat  for this… we hear RKS is… how can I say this… let’s just say they are not moved by the offer and don’t have a problem hiring someone to do the show… it just has to be the right host.   Supposedly the station is willing to “try” the TJMS show but they want to be able to option out of the contract…Joyner is saying no and the station is keeping its options open to ultimately have a “fresh” and “new” show…

Our sources are telling us the station has gotten a backlash after letting Jeff Foxx go and they want to make sure they make a wise decision in replacing him. We hear they are talking to the less “seasoned” host, comic D.L. Hughley but DL is steadfast about keeping his family in Los Angeles but he would still consider the offer. Is this the beginning of another comedian making plans to do a nationally syndicated show on urban? If so what shift is left? (laugh). In other Tom Joyner news, Steve Harvey went to the Chicago Tribune to state that he had nothing to do with Tom’s show being cancelled in Chicago. We will keep you posted on updates.

Is Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey the BEST we can do in Urban Radio?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: As I watch Tom Joyner try to get his show back on in Chicago, I ask myself one question… have we truly forgotten how to groom NEW talent?

Why is there such a great need on the urban side (and CHR to an extent as in Rick Dees) to keep recycling old(er) talent??? Tom Joyner is 60 and Steve Harvey is 56, Keith Sweat is 48. Are you telling me there is no 24 year old out there who shows great promise as the next big thing in urban radio or are we still playing by the dated rules of “pay your dues and someday you will be great” that’s the biggest crock of sh… I have ever heard of and I wish I wouldn’t have fallen for it for the few years that I did. That’s the WORST advice anyone can give or get in this youth driven industry. Out of all 3 of the above mentioned, Tom is the only TRUE radio vet.. but I personally can’t listen to either of them. Tom’s show, the last time I heard it was just a myriad of forced laughter, dead air and 70’s humor. The show is terribly dated and needs and giant youthful swift boot in the ass. Why isn’t there a 23 year old on the show being groomed? I will give Tom credit however as an EXCELLENT community activist and aggressive component for community issues but we have a black president now, we need a bit more than that when it comes to radio.

Steve Harvey… Once again, the show is also dated, I have laughed a couple of times but I have never set my alarm to a station running the show or listened to it in the car. Most of the people on that show have been around for 15 or 20 years too (except Steve who still has limited radio experience).

Keith Sweat, I have never heard the show but EVERY programmer I have talked to said it’s horrific and that Keith is horrid as a host. In addition, they have all also said the show is TOTALLY marketed for women and that men would have little or no interest in it and most of the programmers I talked to about the show…. were men. So that may or may not be fair to Keith.

Today’s hosts or “opportunists” have jumped on the syndication band wagon and they are obviously enjoying the financial ride. I can’t blame them for that. They have done it because comedy or music is no longer working, they say ‘HEY, I’ll be a syndicated radio host and put 100 black professional announcers out of work!’ (laugh). You would be AMAZED (and sickend) at how much these syndicated urban radio people make for appearances and the deals they are offered.   I truly feel for the REAL vets who have paid dues for 20 years just to sit on the sidelines now and watch Hollywood’s rejected urban comics and singers take over our helm.

I am a hardcore advocate for professional announcers QUICKLY rising through the ranks and for the past 15 years, that seems to have become a thing of the past. I have heard horror stories in the early days of urban syndication about promising talent being relegated to board oping for Tom and Steve’s shows instead of building their own careers. While those shows are now automated in many markets, what was the final price to the announcer who once dreamed of rising through the market ranks who is no longer even in radio. I also remember the syndicated hosts using the pu..y excuse “if you do your job you will still get promoted at radio” (laugh).   That was a pile of boiling hot and smelly mule sh….   While urban radio scrambles to survive and prevent layoffs, dwindling staffs and budget cuts, how about promoting and grooming some new talent? Just about everybody who is in pocket in the industry today is around my age and while I am very connected to my peers, it’s like there’s a freeze on developing new talent. I applaud WGCI for taking a chance with 3 (national) unknowns and to develop them to be the NEXT Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey. I also applaud stations like KJLH and Stevie Wonder who no matter how many times he has been approached to run Tom Joyner and Steve Harvey or how much they keep sweeteing the deal, he flat out refuses because he believes in live on-air talent.   Stop bitching like babies when your shows are dropped in certain markets and think about how many announcers you put out of work by taking that show on the station in the first place. With all due respect to Tom, I thought Reach Media was supposed to be a company that would develop new talent… too? Did I miss something? There JUST comes a time when it’s time to move on and groom the next generation. GENERALLY SPEAKING, It’s hard to be 176 years old and convince the audience that you are still connected to today’s music industry especially when you keep talking about music and the good old days from the 70s… Who gives a sh…?   I don’t like all the music from today either but there was a lot of crappy sh… produced in the 70s too. Stop looking back and plan ahead but I guess when you are stuck in the past, what else can you do? We’ve got some AMAZING talent making strides, or at least trying to, in today’s industry who are basically being ignored. As long as old hosts are at the helm of urban radio what else do we have to focus on but the “good ol’ days” and the 70s? Am I wrong for this (comment anonymously if you wish) or are you dying to hear something or someone new too?

Tom Joyner ‘s Back on Chicago Radio?/Another Announcer Out of Work because of it?

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Looks like WSRB Chicago morning show host Carla Box is out at Crawford outlet. Now let’s try to put 2 and 2 together. Another Radio DJ out of work to make room for a syndicated show maybe… ? (I’m really pissed at the whole syndicated market today but it is what it is) BRE states that Tony Gray told them Tom Joyner is in. In all my years in the industry, I have never had one conversation with Tony Gray…. (just an observation). Gray is reporting that Crawford Broadcasting has decided to run the Tom Joyner Morning show putting the radio legend back on in Chicago (yawn). This in effect is Tom’s last chance to prove himself in the market. We will see what happens. The PD, Tracie Reynolds, is not admitting or denying the addition of the show but that’s why we have innovative blogs like radiofactsorg.wpengine.com (laugh) we already know…

OH NO: Radio Segment Goes Awry: Listener Confesses to Witnessing Murder!!!

0

The Industry Dot Biz: Phoenix police are investigating a possible break in a 20-year-old murder case that was called in on a morning radio show Wednesday. According to Officer James Holmes with the Phoenix police department, a person called in to KISS FM radio during its “Confession Wednesday” segment, and told of witnessing a murder two decades ago. KISS FM (KZZP FM) airs the “Confession Wednesday” segment on the Johnjay and Rich morning show. Holmes said the Phoenix police department has been “overwhelmed” with calls regarding the incident since it occurred and have been looking into the situation, Holmes said. Holmes has been in touch with the station and said that they have been cooperating with police to investigate the call. A note on the radio station’s Web site Thursday morning read, in part: “During the Confession Wednesday segment on the Johnjay and Rich Show, a caller allegedly confessed to witnessing a murder . . . We are cooperating fully with both local and federal law enforcement authorities. We will provide more information as this story develops.” Itâ„¢s not the first time that on-the-air crime confession has caused a stir in the Valley. An El Mirage woman was charged with false reporting to police after she told a nationally-syndicated radio show that she shot and killed her boyfriend. She had first reported the death as a suicide. The woman, later identified as Megan Suzanne Vice, called talk-show host Tom Leykis in 2006, saying she had shot boyfriend Tortsen Rockwood in 2001 in their Phoenix apartment. Vice picked up the nickname Å“Ahwatukee Sue™™ from Leykis listeners. Police investigated and suggested Vice be charged with first-degree murder and obstructing a criminal investigation in a report submitted to Maricopa County Attorney’s Office last year. Thomas declined. Vice instead was charged with false reporting, a misdemeanor. An autopsy had ruled that the death was a suicide and Thomas said there was no credible evidence to show otherwise.
