Off-Duty D.C. Firefighter Shot; 17-Year-Old Suspect Faces Upgraded Charges
An off-duty firefighter named Zeek Dziekan was shot during an attempted robbery near 8th Street NE in Washington, D.C., on Saturday night. A 17-year-old suspect put a gun to Dziekan’s chest and pulled the trigger after Dziekan pushed the gun barrel away. Despite heavy bleeding, Dziekan called his own fire station for help when 911 did not answer, and fellow firefighters from Engine 18 arrived promptly and assisted him. The teen suspect also accidentally shot himself during the incident, subsequently demanded Dziekan help him, and then fled the scene. Police later arrested the 17-year-old, who has since faced upgraded charges including armed robbery, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, and aggravated assault while armed, as announced by U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro[1][3].
