Gwendolyn Brooks College Preperatory School located on Chicago’s far south side at 250 East 111th Street is getting ready for a rally bigger than just any local sporting event. On Monday, May 20, 2013 local Black radio station Power 92 FM (WPWX- 92.3) will greet its students with a huge pep rally in its honor, bringing special guest T.I., Atlantic Records recording artist and star of VH1’s hit television show T.I. &Tiny: The Family Hustle. From 10am-12noon Power 92 DJ’s The Hot Boys Tone Kapone (2pm-6pm) and Shagg Nice ( 6pm-10pm), as well as other special invited celebrity guests and local dignitaries will celebrate the outstanding achievements of students at Gwendolyn Brooks Prep who have spent the last year committing themselves to outstanding acts of service done to uplift and evoke positive change within its Roseland residence, Chicago, and the world.
Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory School is led by principle D’Andre Weaver and has been recognized as a Gold Medal School, ranked #13 in the State of Illinois according to US News and World Report. A student body that is 99% minority, over 60% of the student population are enrolled in Advanced Placement Courses. Located in Chicago’s Roseland neighborhood students in its Arts and Culture departments are currently collecting 506 pair of shoes to create a sculpture that represents the 506 lives lost to violence in Chicago last year. On June 7, 2013 all students and faculty at Brooks College Prep are participating in a day of service where they will go out into the local community and conduct service projects in honor of the late author Gwendolyn Brooks. The school is also the most recent recipient of a grant dedicated to growing, cultivating and giving away food to Chicago’s Roseland community as well as food pantries across the City of Chicago. Over 50 of its students and teachers have teamed up with Team World vision as the only high school in the country who will run the Chicago Marathon to raise money for clean drinking water for the people in Africa.
Power 92 FM is 1 of 4 radio stations owned by The Crawford Broadcasting Company that serves the Chicagoland area. The radio network is responsible for the community outreach program “Power 2 Change””which is designed to touch areas of health disparities, education, family cultivation, and the positive uplifting of listeners in the areas in which the radio stations serve.
