**Michigan Preps for Winter: Stay Safe During Hazards Awareness Week**
LANSING, MI – As a chilling reminder that winter is upon us, Michiganders experienced their first taste of seasonal weather this week, nudging us to brace for the inevitable snow and ice. In light of these conditions, Governor Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed this week as Winter Hazards Awareness Week, urging residents to prepare for potential emergencies both on the road and at home.
“We know Michigan winters can be harsh, and it’s essential to be proactive,” said Clayton Cummins, a representative from the Michigan State Police and the Department of Emergency Management and Homeland Security. He emphasizes that preparation is key to navigating the icy months ahead safely.
Residents are encouraged to take immediate action to ensure their vehicles and homes are ready for winter challenges. For vehicles, Cummins recommends checking your tire tread, ensuring that your battery is in good condition, and stocking an emergency kit that includes first-aid supplies, warm clothing, non-perishable snacks, and water. “You never know when you might be stranded or need assistance,” he said.
At home, preparation includes winterizing your space by sealing drafts, checking heating systems, and keeping a supply of blankets and flashlights on hand. “Have a plan in place, especially if the power goes out,” Cummins advised.
With forecasts predicting more wintry weather in the coming weeks, the Michigan State Police and emergency management officials remind everyone to stay informed about ongoing weather conditions and heed local advisories.
As Governor Whitmer stated, “Being prepared can save lives.” So as the temperatures drop and the snow begins to fall, take the time now to ensure your safety and the safety of those around you. This winter, let’s stay warm, safe, and ready for whatever comes our way.
