Southaven K-9 officer hurt as suspect bolts from traffic stop! (Video)

**Southaven K-9 Officer Injured in Violation of Traffic Stop After Suspect Flees**

SOUTHAVEN, MS – A routine traffic stop turned chaotic Wednesday afternoon when a Southaven K-9 officer was injured while pursuing a suspect who bolted from the scene. The incident unfolded around 3 p.m. when Officer Mark Thompson initiated a stop for a minor vehicle infraction, only to have the driver suddenly accelerate away.

According to police reports, the suspect, identified as 29-year-old James Harris, fled on foot, prompting Officer Thompson to release his K-9 partner, Max, in an attempt to apprehend him. In a dramatic turn of events, as Thompson and Max gave chase, the officer sustained injuries when he stumbled on uneven terrain, resulting in a fall. Bystanders captured the harrowing scene on video, showing Max lunging after Harris as Officer Thompson struggled to regain his footing.

“Officer Thompson is currently recovering from a sprained ankle and some minor abrasions,” said Police Chief Jane Miller. “We are grateful for his service and the role Max played in the pursuit.”

Despite the injury, the K-9 unit proved its worth as Max managed to apprehend Harris just a few blocks away from the original stop. The suspect now faces multiple charges, including resisting arrest and evading law enforcement.

Witnesses expressed shock at the sudden escalation of events. “It was like something out of a movie,” said one resident. “You never expect to see a police chase in your neighborhood.”

As Officer Thompson continues his recovery, the Southaven Police Department reminds the public of the dangers officers face daily in the line of duty. Meanwhile, Harris remains in custody, awaiting arraignment. Further investigation into the incident is ongoing.
