Fatal Shooting During Welfare Check in Sterling Heights

STERLING HEIGHTS, MI – In a press conference held on Tuesday, Sterling Heights Police Lt. Aaron Susalla provided details regarding a tragic shooting that occurred during a welfare check on Monday evening. The incident has left the community in shock as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting.

According to Lt. Susalla, officers were dispatched to a residence on the 4000 block of Roselawn due to concerns for a male resident’s well-being. Upon arrival, officers attempted to engage the subject, identified as a 35-year-old man. However, the situation escalated rapidly, leading to the officer-involved shooting.

“During the encounter, the individual posed a significant threat to the officers on the scene,” Susalla explained. “In response to that threat, officers were forced to discharge their weapons.” The man was transported to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead. The names of the officers involved have not been released, pending further investigation.

The Sterling Heights Police Department is currently conducting an internal review, and the Michigan State Police have been called in to oversee the investigation, ensuring transparency in the process. Community members gathered near the scene to express their concern and sorrow regarding the incident.

Susalla emphasized the department’s commitment to the welfare of its citizens, stating, “We take every welfare check seriously, and our officers are trained to handle such situations with compassion and care.” The police department has urged anyone with additional information about the incident to contact them as the investigation continues.
