Steve Harvey discussed the safe return home for WNBA star Brittney Griner. NBA basketball player Carmelo Anthony spoke out in support of Griner. The female basketball player has been jailed in Russia for over 100 days.
Anthony posted a video with a caption. “Our friend, sister, teammate, Brittney Griner, has been wrongfully detained in Russia. It is time to bring her home. Let’s bring attention to the matter by sharing BG’s story and signing the petition at WeAreBG.org,” read the co-host.
“I am Carmelo Anthony. I want to take this time to bring up our friend Britney Griner. 105 days. It’s been 105 days since Britney Griner has been wrongfully detained in Russia. She is a WNBA player, an Olympian, a teammate, a sister, a daughter, a wife. She is a human, and she needs to come home,” said Anthony.
LeBron James also shared a message on Twitter demanding that president Biden and Vice President Harris actively work on Griner’s safe return. James tweeted, “As a decorated Olympian and a member of an elite global sports community, BG’s detention must be resolved out of the respect and sanctity for all sports and for all Americans traveling internationally. Join us in demanding president and vice president Harris bring Brittney home swiftly and safely by taking action today.”
Harvey said Griner is a major WNBA star. If this were Steph Curry, LeBron James, Jimmy buck, or any number of stars, there would be a more considerable outcry concerning Griner. Harvey admitted that he barely thinks about the situation with the athlete because she is hardly in the news. If the detainee were an NBA player, things would be different, argued Harvey.
“If this was an NBA player, a major star like she is, a major star of the WNBA. Oh, my brother, do you think they could keep Michael Jordan over there this long?” said Harvey.
It’s time to shed light on the situation, said Harvey, because what did she do? He asked.
