A teen has died after sand collapsed on him at a Jersey Shore private beach. On Tuesday afternoon, the teen perished, and his sister was trapped after the teen dug a hole in the sand.
Levi Caverly deeply dug the hole using Frisbees, according to the Asbury Park Press. The hole collapsed on the siblings just after 4 p.m. at Toms River’s Ocean Beach 3, a private beach near Chadwick Beach, Toms River police and a report said.
The tragedy took place at Seaview Road, a few blocks north of Kittiwake Avenue, which is the location of the Ocean Beach fire company and rescue squad. Crews from that company and other agencies joined in to find the teen, including Lavallette Public Works and technical rescue experts.
The report said that first responders spent more than two-and-a-half hours pulling the teen out of the sand after being crushed. At about 6:45 p.m., emergency crews pulled the young man from the sand.
According to a person at the scene with information about the rescue effort, the hole was roughly 10 feet deep, reported Toms River/Shore Beach. Rescue equipment included spade shovels to an excavator.
Police said, at the scene, that his sister received medical care after she was saved from the collapsed hole.
At 7:17 p.m., rescue crews were observed leaving the area.
